DD is 6yrs old and whenever I punish her she has this amazing way of making me feel quilty.

For instance......tonight she wouldn't get ready for bed when I told her to. So after telling her several times to get ready for bed I finally told her that she wasn't getting her bedtime story as a punishment. Immediately she breaks down into tears and tells me, "Moms are suppossed to read to their DD's to help them learn how to read." Then it was from her, "I have to return my library book in a couple days and the school librarian said mom's had to read the book every single night."

So did I give in and read the story???? I didn't.....I held my ground despite all the quilt that was dropped on me. I gotta say, it was very hard because she really does make me feel quilty about punishing her when she says these statements.

So....any of you have children that do this???? Or am I the only one????

Oh join the club. My son is 3 and his new thing is "you don't love me anymore" in this really sad, pathetic voice. Anytime I say anything in the way of discipline I get "You don't love me? I love you mommy" and the lower lip stick out. The kid is THREE!!!! So, I've started saying, "Yes, I love you, I just don't love what you are doing." When he is told not to come out of his room, for whatever reason, he'll come out just to "give me a kiss". Oh he is the master manipulator and it irks me.

Beth76 -- My DS and your should get together! He is also 3 and does the pout with the lip out but instead of saying, "Don't you love me anymore", he says "I'm terrible." Now neither DH or I have ever said that he was terrible, so I have no idea where he got it from. He is very cute and he knows how to work it!!

Consider yourself lucky. My daughter just got back from her mom's for summer visitation. All I've been hearing is "Mommy doesn't make me do that" and "Mommy let's me do this" :p

It's good that I couldn't have kids, because I would ave been considered a MOnster Mommy. I can't stand whining and manipulation. My mother never tolerated it.

How about countering with "daughters are supposed to listen to their mothers and get ready for bed on time".

As for the librarian telling her that moms had to read the book every night, I'm kind of doubting that she was actually told that so I'd be tempted to call her bluff and say "Oh, well I'll have to have a word with the school librarian about that next time I see her, she obviously has a different version of the mommy handbook than I do."

I took care of 2 of my nieces. One is 2, the other is 5 1/2. The 5 year old is very good. The 2 yr old is very cute, and mostly good. But she would do something very interesting when I had to speak sternly to her. She would cry and then she would put her hand to her nose and say "my nose. my nose" as if she got hurt and I should comfort her instead! Good thing these kids don't get together!
