My daughter's ex-boyfriend killed himself today

He was only 23. He'd been depressed and was taking the prescription Zoloft (not sure of the spelling). I just heard on the news again this week about a connection with some anti-depressants and suicide. We are all in shock. My heart aches for his poor family. Prayers for them would be greatly appreciated.

That being said I think that there will always be a connection between anti-depressants and suicide. People who suffer from panic and depression and anxiety suffer at times from suicidal tendancies anyway.

I have been on Paxil for 10 years and I can tell you without a doubt that if it weren't for my Paxil I would be dead today. The thought of living my entire life each and every day suffering from the kind of panic I had was unimaginable.

I feel the most extreme compassion for people who suffer from these diseases.

My daughter is taking it pretty rough. She just broke up with him last week. I told her she can't blame herself and she knows that, but it's still extremely painful. He was a very nice young man. She's out right now with a friend so they can talk. I've spent the whole day with her up to this point and we've been crying all day. Thanks so much for your concern.

I'm so sorry for this poor boy. There's new information coming out everyday about the connection between suicide and antidepressants(ssri's). The FDA is having hearings on Sept. 13 and 14th to discuss just this. Congress is also having a hearing on September 9. These can be VERY dangerous drugs for some people. Evidence is now coming out that shows a lack of a liver enzyme that metabolized these drugs in some people, which results in extremely high drug blood levels. This is what is now believed to cause the suidical tendencies. I hear stories everyday about more and more children killing themselves. Its tragic! I speak from experience having a child who attempted suicide on paxil and luckily didn't succeed. He's now off paxil and back to his normal self. Blaming the depression isn't the answer!My son was never depressed, he was put on paxil for a panic attack. There's just to much evidence proving otherwise. That is so sad, sandbar. His family and friends, and certainly your daughter will be in my prayers. Keep a close eye on your DD for comfort she needs. So sad.

please keep a close eye on your daughter over the next couple of months. Feelings of guilt and responsibility are very common after losing a loved one or close friend to suicide. She may be dealing with many complicated emotions over this tragedy.
