My daughter's class gets interupted... by The Stanley Cup!

So, if you go to the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Cup might not be there?
Sorta... I'll let you in on a little secret, there's actually TWO identical cups. The HOF has a 2nd Cup that goes on display there whenever Lord Stanley's Cup is out "on tour". IIRC, the only way to tell them apart is from the underside.

Update: There's actually THREE. The original bowl/cup is on permanent display at the HOF. What you see handed out to the champions and people drinking out of, taking on tour, etc. with all of the team members' names on it is the "Presentation" cup, and then there's the "Replica" cup that stands in for the "Presentation" cup when it's out having fun. The Presentation Cup was secretly made in 1963 by a Montreal silversmith and the original retired... the "switch-a-roo" wasn't revealed for three years. The Replica cup was made in 1993.

You beat me to it. I was going to say the exact same thing.

Ya know, I thought it didn't look as shiny as it does on TV!

Well, that's a relief! Can't wait to see it!

Hmmm, there's a chance lightning may strike in my family two days in a row! We live in Southwest Michigan and last night our older son (a HS Junior) got an e-mail from his hockey coach. It instructed the team to show up today at a location at our airport at 5 PM sharp. The players are to be in suits, and bring their hockey gloves and sticks. The purpose of the event is to meet a "Special Guest". No other details were given. I also happen to know that the coach's wife is from Hancock (a small town), where the guy traveling with the cup yesterday is from. Hmmmmmm!!! We'll see later today!

Greetings from the UP!

Brad brought the cup to my DS school today. There was an assembly that the kids attended. It was really cool. That being said, one of our neighbors is a retired NHL player and he brought the cup here when the Devils won. He had a big party and we were all invited. I must say it is quite the experience to see Stanley in person!:thumbsup2

Cool Geoff M that your D got to see the cup and that it was in Houghton. My DS goes to Tech, but I'm sure he had no idea the cup was there.

My DS graduates this year, he's loved his time in the UP but is excited to be looking for a job. He doesn't care where he goes but if he had his choice I think he would go somewhere south!

:woohoo: Thats great Geoff!! Hope your Son gets to see the cup today!!!!

I once heard that the Stanley Cup is the most recognized trophy in the world.... even non hockey fans know the cup and get excited to see it!!!

We'll see... I hope we're not reading too much into the e-mail!

Or maybe you're not reading enough into it.... Well, you definitely have to let us know what happens!!

OT, but what good hockey stores do you have around you? We are heading to Perani's (I think in Livonia???) this weekend or next to get our daughter new goalie equipment. Our Perani's could order it for us, but we'd rather she be fitted and get a chance to try to it all on. It is hard to find left-handed youth goalie equipment (in the right colors, of course) around here.

I'll post who or what the "guest" was, for sure.

The best local place around us is Hockey Services in Kalamazoo. They have a web site if you want to check out their stock and selection. Not as big as some of the larger Perani's, but they're good people to work with.

This morning I got a message from my daughter who is a student at Michigan Tech University (WAAAAY up in the UP of Michigan). She's taking a hockey class for a PE credit this semester. Today, the rink manager decided to be nice and resurface the ice half way through their class. As they waited on the bench, the rink manager stopped the Zamboni in front of the class and said "Hey, did you know the Stanley Cup is up there." and pointed to the lobby. Apparently, the guy that does video breakdown work for Chicago is from Hancock and it was "his day" with The Cup. My daughter's teacher then told the class that if they wanted to they could take their skates off and run up to see the trophy.. which they eagerly did!!! She was thrilled that she was allowed to touch it! The only bad thing is that her cell phone w/ camera was in her locker at the time!

Nice surprise, don't you think?!?!?!

Very cool, our daughter's boyfriend attends Michigan Tech, wonder if he got to see it. We were lucky enough to get a viewing at Adrian College a few years back. Gotta' love the armed guards around it when it is on display. :thumbsup2

We'll be in Kalamazoo twice this winter for a synchronized skating competition (my other daughter). Too bad it won't be earlier in the season. I will keep them in mind if we can't find anything at Perani's - thanks!

Very cool! I held the Stanley Cup last year when it was here in Madison. It was at the Kids Day at the Kohl Center on the University of Wisconsin campus. I walked into an empty room with a UW Athletics representative the Cup and she asked me if I wanted to hold it. You bet! Sadly, I did not have a camera.

I also saw it go from rooftop to rooftop across from Wrigley Field shortly after the Blackhawks won.

Rats... no "double strike". We have a local aviation history museum here and the coach had arranged for the team to be photographed with one of the WWII fighter planes... oh, well!!

Dang! Oh well.... Does the coach have a connection to the plane? It wasn't a P40 by chance, was it (that's what my father worked on in WWII)?

Maybe they're sending the picture in to the paper or something???

Oh well, hope your son wasn't disappointed!

He doesn't remember what type of fighter it was. I know it wasn't a P-40. They have one, but it's hung in the air in the entrance hall of the museum. It was the personal plane of the woman that was the founding force (along with her husband) of the museum. She was as a WASP in WWII and bought one after the war as a personal plane.

In the end, he wasn't too disappointed. He knew that our guess might be wrong going in.

They're going to make a poster out of the photo.

U think she'd send me some pasties?
We pass by Muldoon's in Munising on the way up to Tech, but I don't think they'd keep!
