My daughter has Cholesteatoma.....

Thanks. I am sure she will be fine, but a Daddy worries!

Worry is what Daddy's do, isn't it? :wizard: and a little prayer for your little one and a prayer to guide the surgeon's hand. Keep us posted, pleae.

I am sure everything will go smoothly (but, I would be an emotional wreck too).

Prayers for DD.

Chuck, my DH had this surgery about 3 years ago after 35+ years of ear infections and tubes. His was very advanced and he actually lost one of the bones in the inner ear and had to have his eardrum reconstructed. He does have some hearing loss in that ear but not from the surgery- his hearing actually got better once the c-toma was removed and the reconstruction was done.
PM me and I will give you all the details of the surgery and his recovery. He's going to have to have surgery again in a few months to remove scar tissue that is interfering with the reconstructed eardrum.

Thanks! But I'm much better now. It was just the initial "shock".... She "should" be even better if all goes well! :thumbsup2

Yup, she will do great- it's wonderful that they caught this early! And if she is lucky, they might even be able to go in through the ear canal to remove the c-toma, rather than the 'big' incision behind the ear.
The first two days will be the roughest for her- make sure she gets her pain meds regularly, don't wait for her to be in pain. Once the bandages come off after two days she will be back to her old self! And she might not even have stitches, my DH didn't have them, just tape over the incision.
My DH had the surgery at Temple and they were wonderful, although I am sure you will probably be going to one of the children's hospitals.

My dd had a cholesteotoma in her right ear about 4 yrs ago. Hers was very bad and we almost lost her. The infection destroyed all the bones in her ear and was eating away her skull and entering her brain. You are very very lucky it was found early on. She had had 5 surgeries in all. The biggest problem now is because she has no mastoid and a very large "open cavity" in her head she is prone to infection. During one of the surgeries they did an ear canal enlargement so her DR. can go in thru the front and vacuum out her ear infections. Sounds painful but it is not. After her intial surgery she spent 2 days at All Children's. She did very well and was not in alot of pain. They did have to shave her head and I think that was the hardest part for her. I wish you the best.
