OK, I know what it is, and how they treat it, but what I want to know is how dangerous the treament "could" be, and how bad the post - op would be for a 5 year old. Will she be in a lot of pain? And, I guess, the need to shave all the hair off around the ear.

Any peripheral stuff you can tell me would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Edit: Cholesteatoma is when skin, inside your head, grows around your inner ear, and it can lead to loss of hearing, facial paralysis, brain damage, or in extreme cases, even death......

but that is if you don't get it treated in time. I think we are fine as it was probably caught very early.

I had to look that one up. Interesting. Does she have it because of repeat ear infections? The article I was looking at stated that as the number one cause.

I would suggest that you make a list of questions and bring them to the surgeon who will do the operation. As for her recovery time, kids are extremely resilient! When my son had his tonsils and adenoids removed, the day of the surgery he looked like he wasn't going to make it. The next day he was running up and down the hospital corridors.

Good luck to your daughter and to you too Dad. I'm sure she'll be fine.

Probably. She has had 5 ear infections in her life... and yesterday they found it while putting tubes in. So now she gets a CAT SCAN and then the operation.

I have no idea what that is but prayers for you and you little girl.

Thanks. I am sure she will be fine, but a Daddy worries!

I'm not sure what cholesteatoma is but I have said a prayer for you dd. Hope all goes well.

My neice had this from repeat ear infections they found when inserting tubes. She had the surgery to remove the tissue and has had nothing since and now, 10 years later everyone has forgotten she ever had it!

I think the 'horror' stories that you read about it are if it goes for a long period of time untreated, even after symptoms appear.

Prayers and Pixie dust to your sweet baby girl!

I've never heard of it, but I'm glad it was caught early. Prayers going out for an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery for your little girl. :grouphug:

Being a parent continually tests your strengthen doesn't it?! Prayers and positive thought to you and your daughter. I am sure those are extreme cases and she will be just fine!

Deuce, my daughter had a cholesteotoma in her ear.

They are uncommon, but not too serious. DD had the operation when she was 5, and as I recall, it grew out of her ear tube. She had so many ear infections when she was little that we just figured she would never hear right.

They went into her ear under general anesthetic, removed the tissue and the tube, and placed a patch over the area.

Other than the anesthetic, we weren't worried. She slept a lot the first day, but then she was back to normal!

Thanks Triple R!. I have to say that I am worried. But, at the same time. I know that the doctor we have doing it is top notch!

Hope everything goes well for your daughter, Papa Deuce. It sounds like she has a great Daddy who will take care of her!

I am sorry you all have to go through this. A prayer said for your daughter. :grouphug:

My heart goes out to you - my DD had to have surgery on her ears at 15 months, and the scariest thing was the anesthesia - but everything went fine - she is 16 now, and hears fine [ is driving too! YIKES!]Good luck to you all.

I hope all goes well with you girl. It sounds like she will get lots o' love and great care from all involved.

I've never heard of this but my daughter has had a ton of ear infections. What would be some symptoms of this to worry about. Drs. have never mentioned tubes either. She gets about one ear infection every 5 months or so.

Good wishes sent to your family!!!

My daughter also had a cholesteotoma, it was found at the age of 13. She has had hearing loss in her ear for years (so has some other problems too) but the cholesteotoma was only found about 10 months ago.

She had it operated on in February and everything went very well. They did not have to shave her head, as a matter of fact I don't think they shaved much of anything at all. She had a bandage over her ear for 2 days and then it was removed and all that was left on was some steri strips to hold the sutures in place behind the ear. She wears a hearing aid so was unable to use that for about 2 weeks and then was fine.

After the operation she was put on an antibiotic, some ear drops and something for pain (which she only really used for the first couple of days)

If you have any further questions, PM me, I will be happy to talk about it.

:)
