My father is 87. Back in 1994, he had a mitravalve replaced and during surgery, the doctor "nicked" the lower portion of his heart. They needed to put in a pace maker back then to help keep his heart in rhythm. Over the years, his heart has continued to weaken. It has gotten to the point where the damaged lower portion either beats erraticly...or just stops for several seconds.
The cardiologist, after seeing results from a test he had at the end of last week (and then from a nuclear stress test yesterday) want to change pacemaker and use a 2 in 1 deflibulator instead. She is talking to the surgeon today (she called with the results from her home last night) and they are calling today to tell us when we need to get Dad in the hospital. Without this device installed, the outcome would be "devastating". He'll need to be in the hospital for at least a week. He is on a blood thinner and they need to get his blood thicker before surgery, then time to adjust the defib., then time to get his blood thin again. He kept insisting to me that this was going to be a 'same day' procedure.
Not quite!
If you have a chance, say a prayer or send some pixie dust for a very nervous 87 yr old who still likes to play cards "with the old people" (not him though!!
