My Dad was married when his youngest sister, Jeannette was born. He is the oldest of 14, she is the youngest. He was 23.
When she was 13 and began to be too much for their Mom, my parents took her in. She was a country girl from North Carolina, now being brought up in the mean streets of Brooklyn, New York. It was a big change for her but my parents loved and cherished her like she was their own.
I was born when she was 14. To me, she is and will always be my sister, not my aunt.
Well, many years later, Jeannette has been married and divorced 5 times and has three incredible grown children and a year from retirement when she finds out my Mom is ill. My Mom was MORE than a mother to her. Jeannette cherished the very ground she walked on. She flew from New York to be by her side till she died.
At her funeral, my Dad, now 83 and in a nursing home, took her hand and told her he wanted her to come down and take care of her.
This past Thursday he got his wish. My aunt retired early to come down and do for her brother what he did for her 47 years ago....
She told me "your Dad took care of all of us, it's time we took care of him."
He is now reaping what he sowed.
