We were at WDW last month and my parents were with us from July 8-12 at BWV. My father has a back that wasn't too bad when we left, actually (he gets a shot of something to relieve the pain and had scheduled it for late June) but he is getting surgery next Thursday. We had no idea if it would be bad or not on our trip, but didn't want to take chances, so thanks to info from this board we rented from Walker Mobility. He had only practiced at grocery stores.
Renting a scooter was a really smart move. We walked to Epcot and it made it a lot easier for him--actually mom commented a few times that dad had energy and she didn't because he had the scooter! CMs go out of the way to show you where to go and the easiest way to go for shows and parades.
Walker had it there right on time and we turned it in late the night before they checked out. It was a good fast one too!
Dad only had two negative experiences. First we got on a bus at AK and the bus driver told him to put it facing one way--then changed his mind--but wanted dad to move it--DH was taking my DS to the front of the bus so Dad did move it and did it in a big, loud slamming way which didn't do his back any good.
Second, dad and mom were coming back from Epcot on the boat. Dad 'scooted' up the ramp where a CM was standing with his hand on the gate. Instead of just opening the gate, he took his hand off the gate and told dad "you can get it". He didn't know my dad either--RAMMING SPEED!!! I don't know why the guy just didn't open the gate, but dad whipped it open pretty good.Did I mention patience is NOT his strong suit?;)
Dad also says he has a lot more empathy for people in wheelchairs and scooters now, because people just were cutting in front of him and acting as if he wasn't even there.

Thanks for the report. I enjoyed your trip reports over on Trip Report board. You had a great time. Glad your dad was able to enjoy it too.

Glad to hear you had a good time (and conserved energy).
I don't quite understand the situations with the bus and the boat. It sounds like there was something missing in the instructions from the CMs. Sounds like everything turned out OK though.
