My dad and US, any help?

We are going on a family trip to WDW June 2-10 and taking mom and dad, their first time. My concern is he has a pace maker, inhaler, and a hearing aide. He can't do most rides and he is afraid he might have trouble with his hearing aide in some of the inside shows, closed quarters. He gets very tired very fast and out of breathe. How can we still do the stuff the kids, 6, 10, and 13, want to do but still spend our vacation with grandma and grandpa? He says don't worry but... we don't want dad to get bored waiting for us constantly to get off a ride while he has to people watch? Anyone have any suggestions for us to ALL have fun?

You'll probably be surprised by how many rides he can actually do. Even if he's not up to white-knuckle thrill rides, there will still be lots you can all enjoy together; in fact, there are a lot fewer thrill rides than gentler rides and shows. It'd probably be best if he talked to his Dr before you leave, to discuss the types of ride he should avoid.

As a rule of thumb, the rides that have a red triangle icon on the maps and signs are the wilder rides, that might cause problems. If you have any questions on the nature of the ride, you can ask the Cast Member at the entrance to the ride, and they can give you details as to what you might find problematic.

As for the hearing issues, you might want to look into getting a Guest Assistance Card (GAC) to allow you to sit closer to the front (see the FAQ for details on the GAC). Also, a number of the rides and shows have some form of closed captioning, if this would help.

In addition to the GAC for the hearing, I would suggest that you rent an ECV for him from an off-site vendor. That way he will not get tired out.

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including where people rent ECVs.

And if he is in an ECV he can carry packages (in the basket) and even run errands; the real good thing is he will have no problem keeping up with the rest of the family.

And with the ECV he can get all the way to the boarding area on most rides.
