My concern for the USA

In the wake of the historic election which has just taken place I have concerns that the lead up to the election has been so divisive that people will have problems getting on together in the immediate aftermath.

At the end of the day, we are all still Americans, and like siblings, we may fight amongst ourselves from time to time, but we will stick together in the end.

Both sides are (were?) passionate about their candidate, but now the decision has been made, and we will pretty much go back to life as usual. :goodvibes

I will now be interested to watch and see if our new president can deliver what he has promised. If he can, then THAT will be an even bigger first! :thumbsup2

I worry about this too. I don't ever see us united anytime soon sadly. Maybe the next election will have a more centrist candidate. :confused3 I have no hope for the next four years, but I have to hold onto hope for the future beyond that. :thumbsup2

Nah, I think we'll be okay. In a few days, when people calm down a bit, most will realize that it's better to work together than to spend the next 4 to 8 years fighting about everything. The fringe on both sides won't let it go, but then if they did, they wouldn't be on the fringe! But I think for the most part we'll see people working together.

Well Elisabeth on The View seems okay and inspired so maybe we will be okay.

:grouphug:

We'll be OK. My candidate for Senator in MN didn't get elected, but hey at least I voted. I agree with the OP...we're like a bunch of brothers and sisters squabbling...we'll get over it.

Man, how many presidential elections have you been thru? This happens every 4 years. The last two were dragged out (can you say Hanging Chad, FLORIDA FLORIDA FLORIDA and Ohio?) and the one before that was a 3 way fiasco! It'll be okay!

I think you need to do a lot of soul searching....

in my 46 years i have been dissapointed in election results but I have NEVER lost hope in my country!!!!

I pray that you and others like you who have hardened your hearts against President-Elect Obama....will try to open your hearts and truly listen to him...

I don't think that this election is any more divisive (if not less) than the 2000 election when soooo many people felt like the election was stolen because Bush did not receive the popular vote. If we were able to get past that in 2000 then I'm sure that we will be just fine. Also we did not have such an electrifying president elect then as we do now. Obama will bring our country together!

I was not a Obama supporter, but I do see some good in his election. The fact that a minority has been able to push themselves up to the highest office in the country speaks volumes about how we see each other now compared to how generations before us saw eachother. I think that alone is a big unifier.

We have a long way to go, and I think on some issues, it's going to take some time to heal the wounds that have been created. I have faith in America. I have always believed, and always will believe that America is the best country in the world and the majority of Americans are good people who have the ability to do tremendous good in this country and through out the world.

ETA:
Obama will bring our country together!

No, WE will bring our country together because we are Americans and that's what we do!

I sincerely respect that you have chosen the person you believe in. I also hope that you will respect that I have made my own conclusions about that man and that they will not change. :hippie: Only time will tell which one of us is right, but I cannot betray my beliefs.

I presume that you are one who prayed about the election....
perhaps you should realize prayers were said on both sides ..

perhaps you need to be open to Gods answer......

Nothing Obama has said or stands for would get me to be happy about this. However, McCain's speech last night will at least get me to put up with it. ;) I'll have to keep it in mind.

NO, Obama will play a major role in bringing OUR country together unlike Bush who tore us further apart.

How is he going to do this exactly? I know many many people who seriously dislike the man and his ideals. What is he going to do to make us love him? I'm afraid to find out.

I do hope that you all will get on, I have connections to the USA my DW is a duel national, her mother was born in Cincinnatti and worked for the state department overseas where she met her husband who was a British diplomat. My DSIL lives in San Francisco although she is visiting here at the moment and my Niece lives in South Carolina, both her and her husband have US citzenship now.

From a pragmatic perspective perhaps the continual swinging of political direction between left and right is a wastefull situation and that a movement toward the centre from both parties may be more in societies long term good as seems to have happend in the last few years here.

the party divisions should have ended last night when he won, it is the only way we can ever get this country back to be really great. The party type politics is what kills us every time, when the president has a great idea it gets shot down by the opposite party in the house and senate and that just stinks.

How is this going to work exactly? Our ideas are SO different. I want the Republican party to stay strong and oppose Obama and his party's ideas. I am planning to do everything I can to make sure that my party knows that.

I think our only chance to be united is to have a centrist in office and that is certainly not Obama, so maybe we'll have a chance in the future.

And I know many many people who honor and respect and admire this man and his ideals. You will have to ACCEPT the fact that he is THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. You will have to ACCEPT that the majority of the voting citizens of the USA wanted it that way and are NOT afraid to find out how he plans to bring this country together. We all have options and you can CHOOSE to sulk and cry and moan about the fact the he is the next POTUS or you can try to be open minded and at least give him and OUR COUNTRY a fighting chance!
