We're leaving in 3 days - we're bringing 4 suitcases and a garment bag for me, DH and 2 kids. I may be overpacking - but I don't want to do laundry and I want to be able to change and pick what I want to wear based on my mood. I decided not to stress about squeezing things into fewer suitcases - they should fit in each other and be able to go under the bed. Also, I don't have each one stuffed to the gills - it not only keeps the clothes from getting wrinkled, but it keeps the weight under control and leaves room for souvenirs! (I also have a large LL Bean Duffle bag packed in one of them for the return trip home.)
My other tip - and this one I was glad I did last year - I don't pack all of one person's stuff in a single suitcase. I mix it up so everyone has something of everything in each suitcase - last year one of our bags took a detour and I was so happy to have clothes packed away in another bag!

No, I didn't think so - but that is a good use for a tie!
