My closest Walmart just became a Super Store!

Shout out from Freehold here!!! LOL The Walmart in Freehold is turning into a Super Walmart too and so it the Target in Manalapan. I'll have to drag my BFF to the Neptune store to see what to anticipate for Freehold.

Hi! We were in the Freehold Walmart a few weeks ago. We were shopping at Dicks Sporting Gooods. And stopped at the Walmart as well. :)

Thanks for all the replies. After reading this thread, I am glad I didn't buy any meat yesterday. The produce section looked great yesterday, but it was the grand opening. I wonder if it will go downhill. I'll check some of the other prices next time I go. I did buy some yogurt & snacks for the kids & they were priced well.

I love my local Super Walmart. I do almost all of my grocery shopping there EXCEPT for meats/fish and produce. I do buy bananas at Walmart sometimes, because they are so much less expensive than Stop and Shop, but other than that, I got to Stop and Shop for meats/fish and produce, Walmart for most of the other things I buy.

I was just there yesterday. I found a pound of turkey meat for $1.88 and turkey meat already seasoned with taco seasoning for $1.88 as well. It was the rolled kind if that makes sense. I bought them but haven't tried them yet. I forgot, I also got some bagged mussels when they were on sale. I want to say they were like $4 for 2 of the 2 lb bags and were delicious. I also got some apples and gallons of water (courtesy of Hurricane Earl). Good to know about their other meat. Someone just told me about a butcher shop right down the street from my work. I usually just go to BJ's to get my meats but I might try the butcher. I would rather pay a little more money and get a good cut of fresh meat rather than paying less for meat loaded with preservatives.

Another Jersey girl here! I hate the produce department at Super Target in Ocean but they do have the cheapest granola bars around. $1.88 of a box of Quaker. Haven't been to the new Walmart but I buy produce at Wegmans in Ocean or local produce markets.
walmart does have the best prices on cleaning products

I found out last week that our target became a Super Target. The produce all looked pretty bad though & the prices on much of the stuff were high :o(

Was it really a true SuperTarget (Target's superstores have full delis, bakeries, etc.), or was it just your regular store with a wall knocked-down, asiles rearranged, and some grocery items added?

Normally, for a former neighborhood Target to go "super", they usually demolish most of the building and the whole reconstruction process takes about a year.

Also, if the Target is a "super", the outdoor signage would be changed to reflect that.

The reason I asked, is that I noticed you were from New Jersey, and to the best of my knowledge, there are no true "supers" in that state (because the union who represents ShopRite, Pathmark, and the rest would have their issues, which took Walmart years to deal with before they opened their first Supercenters in South Jersey, a few years ago).

I've been buying alot of my staples at our walmart. I am a lable shopper, but have been trying their value brand and have been extremely happy with the item. We use egg beaters which runs around 4.99 at our local stores. I tried WM brand (value) for 3.38 and it is absolutely the same, no difference. Now my daughter is using it too. Plus their half/half fat free is $1 less than our local store. Yogart is always cheaper, along with milk and eggs. I buy lots of salad fixing here too. We've been saving a ton of money after shopping here for the last 2 months and have been pleasantly pleased with their brand items. As others have said, I don't buy meat here as I'm happy to buy it locally at our grocery stores when they have a sale. I am a sale shopper and stock up constantly, but once a week we stop at WM for our dairy items and fresh produce. If you know your prices, then you'll do well here. Don't be afraid to try their brands, I did, and am glad I tried them.

from Brick! Anyone from this area knows the Rt 70 corridor and all the stores in a 2 mile (?) stretch there, but since I work for a particular supermarket chain, I shop where I work...although not 100%....I have noticed our Target has an expanded grocery/frozen section where I have found things cheaper than even at my own stores!
I have shopped at Super Walmart where my mom lives in Florida, and find it funny that you can buy shoes and bananas in the same shopping trip...and yes, if you don't stick to a list, there could be trouble ahead! :)

Hi neighbor,
When I saw this I figured you were talking about Neptune. I kind of wish we would get a Walmart up here, not necessarily to shop there, but the competition would help. I usually end up getting groceries at Pathmark, not really the best prices, but they are friendly, not as crowded, and when I shop the sale they are competitive. Had a couple of issues with Shoprite meat and stopped doing most of my shopping there.
I think they just added the grocery to Target, it is not considered a Super Target, it doesn't have the square footage. We go pretty often and I am still having a hard time remembering where things are now.

Yep! We were at the Outlet center & I needed a couple of things.

If I had known it was the Grand Opening I would probably have stayed away, but I'm glad I went. It wasn't too crazy crowded.

So where in NJ are you from? I'm in Middletown Township :hippie:

No, then I guess it is not a Super Target. They did have fresh produce, and a grocery section, can't remember what else. I don't go to Target or Walmart very often. I do most of my shopping at ShopRite & Costco, and occasionally Food Town (they are close & have Boars Head, but the rest of their prices are not great.) The Target w/ the grocery section is not my closest Target either, so I really had not been there for a while.

We're not crazy about their meat and usually go elsewhere for that. As far as staples go, their store brands are, in most cases, as goods as the name brands but much cheaper. Their produce is usually pretty good and cheaper than other supermarkets. Even some name brands are significantly cheaper than other places.

When I get ready to shop I go online and see if another store can beat WM's prices that week. If they can then I make a separate list for that store but still get most of my shopping done at WM.

Honestly, I hate Super WalMart. They always seem dirty and hot. The produce and meat are low quality so while I occassionally pick up a few things there, I never buy produce or meat.

They have been under construction for quite a while, and today was the big grand opening of the Marketplace section of the store. It looks like they have a nice selection & all of the produce & meat looked great. I didn't do much shopping as I ran in for 2 items (was actually sneaker shopping at the outlet center next door), didn't know the market had opened & didn't have my coupons.

So what items so you find to be a great deal at Walmart?

How are their meats/ produce/ deli & bakery items?

Anything you avoid buying there because it is not good quality?

My only experience w/ Walmart super centers is in Orlando during my Disney trips.

Thanks for any info!!

You must be talking about the one in Ocean Twp? We visited there before our Disney trip 3 weeks ago all of the food was there except the produce and meats, looked good, I am super excited about it. My fiance said its bigger and nicer than the one his parents have in NH, he said that he doesn't recall them having a meat department.
I remember someone raving about their bakery, does it have a bakery section?

We also went to the Target that has been converted but it was a joke compared to the Wal-Mart. I mean I really loved Target but it was by no means as equipped as wal-mart was in terms of groceries.

Will the Wal-Mart now be opened 24 hrs?

I've noticed that around here it varies from store to store. I have four SWMs within five miles of me (literally one each North, South, East, and West of my house). One is always kind of trashy looking and beat up even though it's only a few years old. Two others are OK. The last one is really nice. Always clean and the staff is friendlier than at the other ones.

Yes, the Neptune store. They have a bakery department, though I didn't buy anything. I am not sure if they are 24 hours now or not, but I suppose the website would say. The Target store should just pack up the produce department because the stuff looked so bad. :sad2:

I get most of my produce from Wegmans as well. And I love their breads. They have pretzel bread that is awesome.

The Target that they are talking about was huge to begin with. They didn't knock anything down, but they did rearrange a bit.

I was at Target the other day when the transformer fire in Neptune blew out all the electricity in the area. I live in Long Branch and it was so hard to get home because some of the traffic lights didn't have cops at them yet directing traffic. Trying to cross Rt 35 by the Seaview Jeep dealer was next to impossible.

The lights went off when I was in the store and they had to tape off all the frozen food cases.

I have a house in New Hampshire and I shop at the WalMart in Rochester. The produce always looks bad there. I never bought meat there, but people have told me that it's not good. I get the pizzas there too, and the breadsticks. Can't find good pizza in NH, so I go with something safe.

If anyone really cares, this is from the Target website
Store Formats
Target® and SuperTarget® stores provide guests and their families with a wide variety of items for meal preparation, including cooking staples, premium meats, gourmet dining options and chocolate desserts – all at incredibly low prices. Exclusive food brands – Archer Farms®, Market Pantry™, Sutton & Dodge® Steakhouse Quality Angus Beef, Choxie™ and Wine Cube™ – offer the well-valued, high-quality, fresh food products at prices that guests have come to expect and love at Target.

In addition to these exclusive brands, each SuperTarget location features an in-store bakery and full-service deli to meet the needs of on-the-go families or household chefs seeking flavorful ingredients. In addition, since 2006, SuperTarget has been a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified organic produce retailer, offering superior quality and low prices on a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables.

Many Target stores also have an expanded food assortment, which includes frozen items, dairy products, bread and cereal.
So I guess that Target is NOT a super Target because there is no bakery or deli.

I like Wegmans for produce & meat, but I tend to get a lot of ShopRite Coupons so I go there alot.

I heard that traffic was horrendous during that black out. We were home when it happened, but my friend leaving work in W. Long Branch said it took her almost 2 hours to drive 5 miles. I can imgine that crossing 35 was a nightmare!
