My cheesy 'Ohana-like luau plans

Well shoot, Sweet Maxine.:( We will be at the cabins but leaving on the 12th It would be fun to have you as neighbors! This sounds like so much fun. BTW, where in Arkansas are you from? We live in NE Arkansas and have all our lives.

Hey judykay53! I'm sorry we'll be missing you at the cabins. We'll be checking in on the 11th, and probably doing our grocery shopping and making a Costco run that day. I can't wait till we go, and time is moving rather quickly.

I'm originally from southeast Arkansas, and have lived in Mississippi for about 15 years now. I do miss the people in Arkansas, the lakes, and mostly nice camping areas. But my husband is not too keen on "roughing it", as he calls it, so the compromise is to stay in the cabins.

I'm starting to think I'll never get through with all this planning. If I don't stop, I may be pulling a small trailer behind my vehicle on the way down just to carry all this stuff!

Sweet Maxine, I can't WAIT to see the Hula Girl outside the cabin when we pick up Pal Mickey!! This is HILARIOUS!! What GREAT fun!!! I'm looking for Mickey a Hawaiin shirt. And yesterday I saw that WalMart had Hawaiin style shirts for little boys for around $6 or so. They were very cute! Tried to get DS 9 to get one, but he said, "Uh, NO Mom!"

Do I need to look for you some of those coconut bikini tops? Hehee. NOT! Also, do they Limbo at Luau's? You could use a bamboo pole.

I saw a recipe for non-alcoholic Pina Coladas in Family Circle May or June issue. I was waiting on dd to have her braces put on and it was the magazine I picked up. Wish I would have written it down. It was VERY simple, with common ingredients.

I think the Sweet Maxine's Ohana swap is a great idea! Heheee - think FW would go for it? I'm sure they'd oblige.

I shudder at the thought of what I would look like in one of those bikini top thingies! ;) I'm going out to Wal Mart today, so I'll check for the Hawaiian shirt. Hey, thanks for the limbo idea. I haven't done that since I was a little girl, and we always played this in my backyard. Of course, that was back in the day, as my son refers to it!:hyper: Oh yeah, I think I may stop at the library for that recipe. It sounds good. I found some drink stirrer things at Big Lots for 99 cents with little palm trees on the tops.

At this rate, I may have to open up my own luau for PS's! ...NOT!!

Sweet maxine

I've been reading about all your "cheezy" plans and I think they sound GREAT! Your family is very lucky you have the patience, the time, and the imaginiation to get this all together!

You are going to have a really memorable trip!!

please take pictures and videos and post them and a trip report when you come back!

sweet maxine, your plans aren't cheesy at all!! I wish we all had the time to do it as well. We will be staying at the cabins for the first time in Oct, and I am trying to put together my menus for what I will be cooking. I am hopefully trying to put together something with a Halloween theme, any ideas?? They just built a Party City here in my hometown about a year ago. I love to go there, I only wish I could afford to more often. They had the cutest luau and summer stuff there the other day. Enjoy your trip!

Well, I just packed all my luau stuff for the trip and it fills a good sized cardboard box! What was I thinking? Oh well, my husband found the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack for me on an out of town trip this weekend, so now we'll have background music. Sorry Elvis!

Miniefan, I think the Halloween idea at the cabins is great and the weather should be perfect. You could have a cheesy (HA!)
Not Really So Scary Halloween Party at your cabin, and then go on the Haunted Halloween Hayride. I think they still have that, but you might want to call and check first. You could really go with any different theme, and there should be lots of cute decorations at that time. I love Party City, too, and I wanted all that luau stuff, but my wallet said, "No!" :sad2:

I couldn't find the recipe in Family Circle at the library, but I'll keep looking. :wave2:

Wanted to bump this up, because I think Sweet Maxine should be back very soon, and I wanted to hear about the Cheesy Ohanna!:p

Well, I'm back now, after driving all the way home on Saturday. I wasn't sure if I could do it or not, but I guess I got a second wind around Mobile, and made the rest of the way safely home!

Just like anyone else, I'm having post-Disney vacation depression, but I have lots of things to catch up on.

My luau went over so well, and we all had a blast! We put up all the decorations, and lots of people stopped by while going through our loop to ask if we were having a party or if it was someone's birthday. My mom thought that was so funny. I guess we were the only one in the loop with any decorations up of any kind.

We cooked on the grill and had skewered meat with pineapple chunks and onions and bell peppers in between (maybe not true to 'Ohana, but oh well), and cooked the potstickers also. A large bag with about 60 potstickers was around $9 at Costco. BTW, the Costco over off of Orange Blossom Trail is very nice and has the best "Very Berry" sundaes! Yum!!!

We decided to have the kitchen sink-like dessert, so we filled up a large bowl with ice cream, and covered it with chocolate sauce, Reece pieces topping and whipped cream. Everyone wore a lei at the party, including our Pal Mickey! I left the CD player at home, :( so we didn't get to have our background music. And I even had the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack with me! Oh well, I guess I'll have to try again next time.

The weather was okay, and our deck was pretty shady by the time we had dinner. It was really a lot of fun, and I think I'd like to do it again. I still want to try out 'Ohana, though. Maybe sometime on another trip it will work out.

We made the treasure cake for our pirate night dinner, and Mom used some candy rocks to put around the cake. They were so good, I kept eating the rocks, and Mom was having to keep me away. I've never had those before. My grandson was convinced that just any rocks would taste like that and we really had to keep an eye on him!

We had such a fun time at our cabin, and I really miss being there. I hope everyone else has as much fun as we did. I'm trying to talk my husband into going back in December before Christmas. I still have my annual pass, you know!

Sounds as though your "cheesey" luau wasn't so "cheesey" after all!

Actually, it sounds like a lot of the things we always do--at home more so than away. We always have a box or cabinet full of things to create a festive atmosphere, then just have to buy a few items to go with the "theme".

By the way, I have a terrific sweet & sour meatballs recipe, if you decide you want to repeat the experience! It also can be made using chicken or small pieces of steak--what ever you think sounds good!

Hope you post a trip report in the near future. You vacation sounds terrific!

I would love to have your recipe, Taja. The only down side to the whole thing was the box of decorations and such to pack up when we got ready to leave. I brought so much stuff, we didn't even get around to using everything, but it was fun, just the same. I am planning on writing a trip report just as soon as I get a little more rested. That drive is starting to really hit me today, and I'm just soooo tired!

I hope some more people do some things like we did, and add some fun to their trip. It really doesn't cost much, and you get so much for it. :wave2:

I would love the recipe also please

We always drive straight through to Louisiana. Usually leave about 7:30 a.m. and get home about 5:00 p.m. with the time zone change.

Anyway - your Ohana experience sounds like a neat thing to do at home on the patio, for us wishing to be at WDW or Hawaii, but can't.:)

Hi Sweet Maxine, Welcome Home!!

I'm glad your own O'hana luau plans went over so well, I always dread that drive home too, it seems so much longer than it took to get there. We will be in the cabins 10/15-10/23 and will be going to the MNSSHP but I still wanted to do something Halloween for my kids in the cabin so I began looking on Ebay and I won an auction for a Mickey Mouse Halloween Party in a Box so I am going to decorate it one night when they go to sleep and make some halloween themed treat for them the night we go to MNSSHP. Do you or anyone else have any recipes for some spooktacular tasty halloween treats??

PS: I am also trying to find some Disney themed outdoor Halloween decorations for the cabin. I already have a Mickey flag thing. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Glad you enjoyed your trip sweet maxine, now you can start planning the next one. :teeth:
