My CENTRAL VAC turned itself on. ?????

Now if it would just clean the house.

Seriously, I just went downstairs & heard this loud noise. Realized the central vac motor / canister is running. I'm home alone. No one is vacuuming. The hose & attachments are stored in the closet.

It would normally only run once you lift the central vac outlet doors & connect the hose the proper way so when you turn on the switch on the handle, you get suction.

I've checked, all the little doors are closed. But again, simply opening a little door does not create suction. You need elec contact & switch on.

I unplugged the canister/motor power cord to make it stop. What else should I be checking.

This is just weird. I wonder how long its been running for. There was no burned elec smell in the room its in. Do I have a short? In the house vac wiring, the motor wiring, or the elec outlet?

Now I would understand if it happened BEFORE this weekend...because yes, it needed cleaning. But I worked hard this weekend vacuumin all 3 floors & dusting & re-arrang furniture.

However, I used my regular vacuum this weekend.

Maybe my central vac is jealous. Poor thing.

I'll have to say that I've had quite a few things pointed out to me in the last few days. But I don't think that's one of the things.

Nope kitty couldn't have leaned on the switch. It on the vacuum hose handle & that's disconnected & hanging up in the closet.

I tried plugging the canister/motor power cord back in...and it started running again. This is really weird.

Maybe I'll try plugging something else in there...to see if its the outlet. - but I can't see how it would be that.

I was just thinking it was possessed.

My dishwashers do that & yes it's dishwasher(s) since mine have a tendency to break on me. We got smart after a couple & bought a cheap one with a long warrenty -- the thing will probably last forever now.

It would just come on automatically for no good reason. It was bizarre.

The only other thing we had like that was a radio that wouldn't turn OFF. We unplugged it & it had no battery. We tossed it.

So...all I hear is the Twilight Zone music playing with your central vac & thinking "oh another one with a possessed appliance".

Edited to add: You didn't read the cleaning up if someone is coming over thread somewhere it could SEE it did you? Maybe it decided it wanted to make sure you were company ready.

ok, while i like the other answers, here is one a little more on the serious side.
my husband installs central vacs(we own a vac shop). he said it sounds like condensation. he sometimes has to wrap any pipes that are in the attic or someplace that the pipes are exposed. hope this helps.
that will be a 50.00 tech fee. lol!
