((hugs)) As for telling your kids, I wouldn't tell them anything until they asked, if it were me.
I'm paranoid about my cat getting out. She had been an outdoor cat for 2-3 years, and had a couple litters of kittens, but she was always such a loving cat and I finally decided to make her a housecat as I was so afraid of her getting hit in the road (we live on a fairly busy country road). My DH doesn't really like her being in the house all the time, but he just has to deal with it. If I could be 100% certain she wouldn't get hit, I'd let her out, but since I can't be certain she stays in. She rarely tries to get out, but the back screen door didn't shut tight once and she did sneak out. I looked all over the house for her and couldn't find her, so stepped out the back door and there she was!! Thankfully she hadn't ventured far, and was ready to come back in!
