My cat died today (long)

You may remember a month ago we considered putting our cat to sleep. She was peeing in places she shouldn't. Although she was 19 1/2, I just couldn't do it. She was still jumping up onto the washer for cat food (so the dog doesn't eat it) and "talking" to us every day. She was very lively and I knew it wasn't time. I just kept a closer eye on her.
Thursday or Friday I noticed she was sitting in a sunny patch on the floor for a long time. This continued all weekend, except she hid at night. Sunday I put her up on the washer and she just turned away from her food. DS (8) didn't want us to put her to sleep so we put it off yesterday, but she got worse. She did drink out of the faucet twice for DH (she loved drinking out of the faucet) but didn't eat. Last night she came out from under my bed and I took her downstairs and put her by the food again, but she turned away again. I put her down by the water bowl and her legs gave a little. I put a throw pillow by the water bowl and laid her on it. She was still sitting there this morning. When DS tried to get her to drink more, but he and DH put her back on the pillow before they left. DH said she could barely walk.
DD#2 (11) gets home first. She called and said she found her under a chair in the basement (how she got down there I'll never know). I think she went down there to die. DD brought her upstairs and called me. I work 30 min. away. She called 10 min. later because she thought the cat had died, but then the cat breathed again. I told her to call when DD#1 got home. Just as I left at 3:05 she called again and said they were pretty sure the cat was dead. I told them to try the mirror test and call if there was a change. I knew right away when I saw her that she was gone. I made sure the other cat saw her.
I'm glad DD#2 was with her and petting her and telling her what a good cat she was, although she is the most upset of all of us. DH is picking DS up from an after school lesson (thank goodness he didn't see her like that) and we'll bury her when they return.
I feel bad because maybe she wouldn't have suffered if I'd put her to sleep yesterday. We were going to do it today, but what could I have avoided putting her through?
I thought this one would be easier because she was so old--she outlived her vet and 4 different dogs--but it's still pretty hard. We're all sad. I got her when I was 23, for pete's sake. She's lived in 4 homes with us. I'll really miss her.

:grouphug: My thoughts are with you and your family. We have two kitties and I know how hard it can be go through that with a pet. :grouphug:

I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to come to terms with having to put down a pet. Kno win your heart you did your best to make the best decision for your pet, out of love.

BTW, love the name!

I'm so sorry. It sounds as though your beloved kitty led a long full life, and hopefully that will give you some peace. :grouphug:

Aww...so sad.

Her last happy moments drinking from the faucet like she loved to do.

I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry! She died knowing she was loved; you didn't do anything wrong. I know it's tough to lose a pet - but she sure gave you lots of years of joy!

Please don't beat yourself up over it. You did what you felt was best. And I'm sure your daughter will cherish being there with her and being able to comfort her.

I'm so sad for you too. I completely know what it's like to love a furbaby. Our older cat is 22 yrs old & no one can believe it. My DD8 is SO attached I don't know what will happen when she does go. And you did nothing wrong by watching her & waiting . She didn't seem to be in pain from what you say & I think sometimes when they get older they just "wind down". Hugs & warm furry thoughts to you & your family in this tough time.:grouphug:

I'm sorry for your loss and can totally relate as I lost my 13 yr old kitty four weeks ago. I still have real sad moments and miss my kitty terribly! :sad1:

I am so, so sorry.

One thing you need to remember is that death is a natural process, she died peacefully in a warm, safe environment and it sounds like her last moments were with someone she loved. Could anyone really ask for more? Please do not second guess yourself, you did what you felt was the right thing to do. Your care and nurturing gave her a good, long life, she was blessed.

{{{HUGS}}} I know how difficult it is to let go, they mean so much to us.
