You may remember a month ago we considered putting our cat to sleep. She was peeing in places she shouldn't. Although she was 19 1/2, I just couldn't do it. She was still jumping up onto the washer for cat food (so the dog doesn't eat it) and "talking" to us every day. She was very lively and I knew it wasn't time. I just kept a closer eye on her.
Thursday or Friday I noticed she was sitting in a sunny patch on the floor for a long time. This continued all weekend, except she hid at night. Sunday I put her up on the washer and she just turned away from her food. DS (8) didn't want us to put her to sleep so we put it off yesterday, but she got worse. She did drink out of the faucet twice for DH (she loved drinking out of the faucet) but didn't eat. Last night she came out from under my bed and I took her downstairs and put her by the food again, but she turned away again. I put her down by the water bowl and her legs gave a little. I put a throw pillow by the water bowl and laid her on it. She was still sitting there this morning. When DS tried to get her to drink more, but he and DH put her back on the pillow before they left. DH said she could barely walk.
DD#2 (11) gets home first. She called and said she found her under a chair in the basement (how she got down there I'll never know). I think she went down there to die. DD brought her upstairs and called me. I work 30 min. away. She called 10 min. later because she thought the cat had died, but then the cat breathed again. I told her to call when DD#1 got home. Just as I left at 3:05 she called again and said they were pretty sure the cat was dead. I told them to try the mirror test and call if there was a change. I knew right away when I saw her that she was gone. I made sure the other cat saw her.
I'm glad DD#2 was with her and petting her and telling her what a good cat she was, although she is the most upset of all of us. DH is picking DS up from an after school lesson (thank goodness he didn't see her like that) and we'll bury her when they return.
I feel bad because maybe she wouldn't have suffered if I'd put her to sleep yesterday. We were going to do it today, but what could I have avoided putting her through?
I thought this one would be easier because she was so old--she outlived her vet and 4 different dogs--but it's still pretty hard. We're all sad. I got her when I was 23, for pete's sake. She's lived in 4 homes with us. I'll really miss her.
