Well....it is official. We are going to have to replace our air source Heat Pump. I think it is 17 years old. (It was already here when we bought the house). We have been working on it all winter and the last domino to fall is a reversing valve that will not switch. So I think it is time...instead of keeping to dump money in a 17 year old system....to bite the bullet and get a new one.

The company that I have service our system has been doing the service for nearly 10 years. They are very good, with a good reputation around town. We have friends who have used them for a new heat pump and are very happy. So we will probably go with this company....

Here is my question......What brand of heat pump do you have and are you happy with it? And if you don't mind, what kind of money did you spend on it?

I think there are two important points that you make. First, the unit is 17 years old and the reversing valve is stuck. That is terminal.

Second, you are happy with the company that services your heat pump. That is key. I would just ask them about their experience with the units they have installed. And, I would go with what they tell you.

You may also have to have the A coil replaced which really means a new air handler. I think the refrigerant they use now is different than what was used 15-20 years ago.

By having multiple companies give you estimates, you can also get an idea of what the "right" size needs to be for your house. Builders are notorious for putting in the smallest unit possible. You may also add some supply or exhaust ducts if part of the house has been hot or cold for years.

I am sorry I can not share any heat pump experience because we have a new AC and gas furnace here.......but we had to do research and learned a lot as we talked to various companies.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new one when you get it.
