C.Ann, I am so sorry for your sister and the whole family. If no one has mentioned it already be sure to get several copies of the death certificate, the undeeeeertaker can do this for you. You will need one for every life insurace policy, his pension plan, and Social Security. If they had bank accounts, either joint or separate, she will need a death certificate for each account that has his name on it. If there is a safety deposit box or P.O. Box she will probably need one for each of them also.
She will also have to contact a lawyer that specializes in Probate Law, especially if there is no will. This lawyer may cost several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the size of the estate, but it will be more then paid for by taxes he will be able to reduce. Oh I just remembered, if the utilities are in his name they will also have to be changed. I don't think you will need death certificates for the utilities but you may want to check with them to make sure.
