My Beagles--Bonnie and Clyde . . .I need some help

Actually their names are Ben and Belle, but sometimes they ACT like Bonnie and Clyde!! I had a brand new fence installed today so that I could let Ben off his lead to run in our backyard. Our old fence had holes where the lovely neighborhood children had destroyed sections. With the broken slats came escaping Beagles!!! So, Ben had to be put on a lead--Belle won't leave the yard without him.

Long story short, my brand new beautiful fence is up, but Clyde DUG his way out!!!! Bonnie is out there barking her head off to alert us. I couldn't BELIEVE it!!!! So, he's back on his lead until I can figure out how to "contain" Ben. Any suggestions??? I HATE that he is on a lead.

bumping for help--I slipped to page 2!! Anyone know how I can stop Ben from getting out (besides a lead?)

I have no idea........I just keep filling holes when my dogs start digging.......but this will bump it, and maybe someone else can help.

We also have a beagle - the lovable scamp is 2.5 years old and when he goes out for a potty break we have to put him on a lead as well.

Beagles are escape artists and love to run and run and run..... I don't have any advice for you, sorry. My son walks Gunny on a leash for 2 miles every day -- we just can't let him loose on his own. :guilty:

The doxies are just like beagles in that they are led by their noses. We have put railroad ties, cinder blocks, or whatever we have along the outside or inside of the fence. They can't dig through those. What type fence?

I have 2 beagles and invisible fencing keeps them in check no problems unless the power goes out..

I have 2 beagles that are champion escape artists. We put a layer of cement under our wooden fence so they can't dig their way under and it worked like a charm!

My dogs use to do the same thing. After awhile I would stand at the window so I can yell at them when they were going under the fence. It didn't take long for them to figure out why I was always yelling at them and they have been staying in the yard hopefully I am not speaking to soon!

I have also seen on one of these threads that spraying vinegar around the perimeter of the yard will keep the dogs in for some reason they don't like the smell of it. Good luck!

Our dogs can be diggers sometimes too...with Beagles, I suspect it's a bit worse since they seem to have a pretty high prey drive.

The idea of concrete, brick pavers, or railroad ties (or some other sturdy "border" trim) is a good one. You can also try gravel with a layer of chicken wire under it.

Whatever you put though, you will have to kinda bury it deep enough so they can't get through it (maybe 6-12 inches).

Its a wood privacy fence. "Escape artists" is the perfect term!!!

Seems like you will have to bury something pretty deep from the bottom of the fence.

Railroad ties, or chicken wire buried into the groud seem to be your best bets.

The only thing I would bury would be the wire for an invisible fence. Run it right inside your fence line and then the dogs would stay a few feet away from the fence itself as not to hear the warning sounds...

I've seen a couple of people suggest these. I don't know much about them. Are they expensive? Can you install them yourself or does someone have to do it for you?

Our Dori (the doxie in my signature) was constantly digging out from the backyard. DH buried chicken wire next to the fence. He bent it before burying it and she has not escaped since. She was so mad the first time she tried to escape and ran into wire.
