My Baby Has the Chicken Pox!!

My 9 month old DD has a full blown case of the chicken pox! Just in time for Disney World!!
My son had a mild case of them 2 weeks ago (he did have the shot). My DD has not had the shot yet. They don't get it until 12 months. So she got them from him!
Good news is that she is contagious now. By Monday she won't be anymore but she will be covered with spots! Plus she is being christened on Sunday! Won't she be pretty in her white dress and pink spots!
So if you are in the park next week and see a pretty little baby with pink spots, that's us!!!

Surpsingly she hasn't been itching too much.
And they make a clear Calamine lotion so at least she isn't covered in that horrible pink stuff we had to use as kids!

Poor little thing!!! They always seem to get something when you dont want them to!!!
Hope you are going to do a trippie as we are taking our 9 month old grandson soon and so will be looking for any tips at all!!!

I feel your pain! DD got them right before her big first birthday party. We had to cancel it and change all the plans till she was better. What a pain that was! My nephews got them then past it along the family! My DD gave them to me and I was 22 at the time! What a nightmare that was! I'm sending you some pixie dust

Well, I'm sorry........I'm just trying to give it a positive spin. You can always tell the scrapbookers out there. They are always saying, "Oooo, that will make a great page!"

I wish you lived close enough for us to visit. I want my kids to get exposed. I know it sounds horrible, but when they get the "real" thing it protects them for life whereas the vaccination does not. So try to look at the bright side-several shots over the course of a lifetime that your darlings will not have to endure.

I too feel your pain. My DS 11 broke out yesterday with the chicken pox. We are supposed to be leaving for WDW on Saturday... We also have an 8 month old. The doctor isn't worried about him getting them. Hopefully he is right. I think we are still going to drive down on Saturday if DS is feeling up to it and they are drying up. He should be over the worst of it tomorrow and we don't plan on doing anything until Monday or Tuesday.

DS 8 did not get the shot because he had been exposed to the chicken pox several times and he had never gotten them and even if he did get the shot it was not gaaranteed that he would not get them so we opted not to get the shot...

The doctor also gave us an antibotic that will shorten the duration by a day or two.

He had about the same amount of spot last night as he did this morning and that is really not that many considering what I had as a child, so hopefully we will both be enjoying our vacation at the Happiest Place on Earth next week with spots.

Hmmm... I see a 101 Dalmation page in our scrapbook future.

yes i am a scrapbooker. I already took a bunch of pictures and I am thinking of cute pages.
She can wear a red and white Minnie dress to match her red spots! hahaha

This is completely untrue.

Both of my siblings and myself have had chicken pox TWICE, at ages 1 and 3 and again at ages 13 and 15.

This was before the vaccination was available and we definately had the "real thing" both times.

You can indeed lose your natural immunity to a number of diseases.

My sisters also had measles twice (I only had them once).

Regarding immunity, my now 8yo dd's dr. told me that even though she got it around 11mo (who got it from her older sisters) it doesn't mean she is immune. 12mo is the cutoff is what they told me so she is still at risk.

I am so sorry that your little one is sick. Prayers that she is feeling better soon. I wanted to ask if the guildlines for when they are no longer contagious has changed. I know when my DS was little they were considered contagious until all scabs were crusted over. Just wondered if it is now a certain amount of days as you mentioned monday. I also know that many airlines will not let a child with chicken pox fly so you might need to check the air line and then get an all clear from your dr.
Also just wanted to mention that ever though it would be terrible to have to shift your plans, please be sure that she is no longer contagious before letting her near other children on the plane or WDW. There are so many Make a Wish Children at WDW that chicken pox can be so dangerous for. When our friends took thier daughter on her trip, that was their biggest fear.

Mom to Jordan--- I was thinking the exact thing. Airline won't let you fly with signs of chicken pox without an all clear. Please check the airlines guidelines so you won't be disappointed. Also, chicken pox act up horribly when exposed to sun-- get itchier and more inflammed. Find out if you can even use sunblock on open or crusted sores. Good luck.

I have some good news.
My son got them at about 9 mo also and it was a very mild. I'm talking maybe 8 spots total. None on the face at all. At the time the Dr told me babies usually get them very mildly. Keep your fingers crossed that holds true for your little one.

Hope DD is all better soon. We had the opposite happen to us. On checkout day from Disney, DS woke up and said "mom something bit me all over" he was covered in chickenpox! He had the shot and 5 days before we left the teacher had sent a note home saying that students who had not had the chickenpox shot had been exposed to the pox in her class by another student. I didn't think another thing about it until 12 days later. Hope all is well and your trip goes as planned!

DS5 and DD7 both had the shot and last year we went thru the Chicken Pox stint. DD broke out the week school let out for the summer and DS broke out the following week. What a way to start the summer!

Just to let everyone know, I would NEVER NEVER take my daughter on a plane and to Disney World if I even thought there was the slightest chance she was still contagious and could infect someone! I got my pediatrician's ok before I left and got a note stating she was cleared to fly.
Although it would have been a pain to cancel and rebook, I would have done it in a heartbeat if I thought my daughter would become sicker or make someone else sick.
