Remember that I posted a while ago about layering on top of the grass for a new bed rather than digging up the grass?

Well, I am attempting it and it is messy. I put the news paper down and wet it so it would stay put. Then I am mowing over leaves and grass from my compost pile that aren't composting. I am putting a 6 inch layer of this remowed stuff and then a few inches of mulch on top of that.

So, I am at the "will see" point of this experiment.

I have a ivorysilk lilac tree to go in this spot in the fall.

DixieDee - You, of all people, should know that patience plays an important role in the world of gardening! LOL

Amid - I'm concerned that you are not leaving ENOUGH time between doing this and attempting to use the bed. Somehow, I imagined that this type of project would require MORE than two months to make workable dirt. Will be anxious to hear of your progress.

Did you cover it with anything? Try covering with black pastic so it will 'cook' faster.

I don't intend to plant in this bed till spring. What I have for it will have to nursery elsewhere in the yard. I also think by fall I will need to add some more layers..maybe a peat and some lime.

Keep us posted on your "experiment" Amid! :D

I really like Ivory Silk Lilac trees, wish I had a spot for one!

Amid I think this is a great idea.

Do you plan on turning it all into the soil in the spring then start planting. I am always in the process of starting new gardens this idea sounds interesting, sounds like your going to have great soil when it's finished.

I also think a layer of soil on top will help break down the mulch faster.

I did this before after reading about in our local paper in the garden section. I did this in a shadded area in a grove of tree's. It was supposed to compost in about six months but took longer. I think it was because it was in a shadded area? The final result was worth it. Good Luck. Susan:p
