Everyone from my A&P II class that I have talked to is LIVID. A few weeks ago my teacher said that she had some typing (class notes for her) that needed to be done and if any of us wanted to do it, she would give us 5 points added on to our lowest test grade. Now, we take 11 tests, she drops the lowest one and averages the other 10 together. We all assumed that the 5 points would be added to the lowest test KEPT- but yesterday she told us that it will be added onto the lowest test overall. So if your lowest 2 grades are 70 she will make one a 75 and will drop the other 70- BUT if your lowest is a 70 and your next lowest is a 76, she adds the 5 points to your 70 to make 75 then drops it and uses your 76!

I am so angry- I don't like to be used by ANYONE. It took me 2 hours to type her illegible notes.... now it looks as if it won't benefit me in THE LEAST.

<font color=navy>Wow, M'02, that was really uncool of your teacher - she should have explained that up front, instead of using you guys like that.

Are you going to say anything to her?

I haven't decided, everyone is totally po'd by what happened. I'm not supposed to have her for a teacher again, but you never know. I don't want to burn any bridges- ya know?

WHOA! I can see why you are angry and feeling used.. you were! no doubt about it!.... not sure what your options would be.. but do not burn your bridges.. that is the last thing you want to do... hope you have a better day.

A lesson learned. I had a professor ask to keep a couple of my research papers and he published them without giving me credit. Talk about livid.

Well, now you know to check out all of the technicalities of any dealings with this person.

Does your university have any kind of teacher evaluations at the end of the semester? I found that these evaluations were taken seriously when I was in school and I would always document situations like these and explain my postition on them. Since the student info was kept seperate from the evaluations when they were given to the instructors I didn't worry about having a particular instructor again. I saw definite changes for the better in some instructors when I had them multiple times.

Yes we have them Keli- unfortunately we filled them out at the BEGINNING of class and she informed us at THE END of class. I might do an addendum.

While I am sorry that happened, and I might get flamed for this, I do not think that the teacher pulled a fast one. She said she would add 5 points to the lowest test grade. That is what she is going to do. Remember, she doesn't have to drop ANY test grade, she does that to help students achieve a better overall grade. To me, there is no reason to assume she was going to add those points the the 2nd lowest test grade. Just because that is what you were hoping for...from what you wrote, it isn't what she said.

WHY would it be beneficial to us to have points added to a test that she is going to drop? It wasn't beneficial to US but she got all her typing done, so I feel USED! And she DOES have to drop the lowest test grade because it's in the syllabus she gave us at the beginning of the course (that I've got in WRITING). If the class wasn't mislead, why is everyone so po'd at her? She needs to take the ethics class I took before her class I guess.

Has anyone tried talking to her in a calm and rational manner?
Most college profs I ever had are pretty reasonable if you approach them properly.

I'm with WebmasterAlex! I don't think talking to the prof is going to burn any bridges as long as it's done right. Approach straightforwardly and honestly explain how you feel she has taken advantage. I've heard some pretty far fetched things from AP students but the reasonable ones at times had a point. I'd listen!

Alex and Kirk- that's exactly why I haven't talked to her yet... wanna be sure I can be calm. This is a woman though who when I pointed out an answer on my test SHE had marked wrong was right (I had the book in my hand) she said, "Just because the book says so isn't good enough." This was a true/false question.... not a lot of room for misinterpretation. I never did get credit for that!

I would've felt used too, Lorelei. I bet she won't be having any more students in the future to do her any more favors.
