We just returned from our WDW trip (1/18-1/25), and flew Airtran for the first time. I thought I would post my experience with this carrier here, for those of you who might be considering Airtran.

I booked online, and their website was easy to navigate. There were three of us traveling: me, DH and DS (10), and we were able to get airfare for $612.00 (including taxes) for the three of us, which is pretty good advanced-booking airfare from MSP to MCO. We had a connection in Atlanta on our flight to Orlando, but had a straight through return flight, from Orlando to Minneapolis.

I was able to do online check-in for both the departing and returning flights. We stayed at the BC, and I was able to locate fee-based internet service at the YC/BC Convention Center. It was $10/15 minutes, plus $1.00 per printed page, but the CM waived the fee (without me asking) and that was a nice surprise.

I had read that Airtran allows for a $30 pp, per leg, upgrade at the airport on the day of departure, if seats are available, so we decided to go for the upgrade. This meant that we had to stand in the check-in lines at the airport, even though we already had checked in online. It was worth the wait though, because we were upgraded on our departing and returning flights. Note that the fee is $30 per leg, so for our flight from MSP to MCO we actually paid $60.00 pp for the upgrade, since we had a connection in Atlanta.

Our flight from Atlanta to Orlano was overbooked by 7 people, and our flight from Orlando to Minneapolis was overbooked by 9 people. In Atlanta they were having a tough time securing volunteers, and were offering two round trip tickets to anywhere Airtran flies, per person. I so wanted to snag these tickets, as it was just a 3 hour delay to the next available flight to MCO, but my DS and DH so wanted to get to WDW that they would have not part of it. Airtran got their 7 volunteers (and got their 9 volunteers on the flight from MCO to MSP while offering just 1 round trip ticket to each volunteer).

We feel we received very good service from Airtran, on all levels. We also enjoyed sitting in Business class, although the only perks were more leg room and 2 alcoholic beverages each (which we declined). They do not serve meals on Airtran, not even in Business class. We had upgraded snacks, and could have all we wanted of those, but again did not take advantage of that small perk.

I would not hesitate to travel Airtran in the future. They have a young fleet of planes, great staff, and you just can't beat the price for an upgrade to Business class, provided you can snag it!

This is wonderful to hear. My family and I will be flying AirTran in April for the first time. It is always hear that people have been treated right. When I first made my ressies online with AirTran I made a mistake and called the next morning to change to the correct flight. I had meant to book a.m. and I had booked p.m. They switched my outgoing flight to the correct one and didn't charge me the $50 per person fee. Then, just recently they must have added more early non-stop flights and I wanted to change again. They did this and only charged me the $50 fee for 2 of my 4 tickets. Plus this new schedule is less money than my 1st schedule, so I have over $200 worth of credit with them. Everytime I have called them they been extremely pleasant and helpful. Kudos to AirTran!!!!

Hi...we fly AT from Moline to Orlando 3 to 4 times a year. there is a good reason they were only one of two airlines to make a profit last year...they are good. we have had great no frills service and the AT area in Atlanta where most planes switch is beautiful and always handy to the next flight....enjoy...Ted

Glad you had a great experience with AirTran. It's been our experience, as well. AirTran is our first choice when we fly. Hope your vacation went as well as your flights.

blanq -
We're traveling Airtran at the end of the month. I'm curious as to when you got your seat assignments? We have them for the return flight, but not the departure flight.

I fly Ait Tran from Flint to Orlando 3 to 4 times a year and have always had good service, only once was my flight delayed from MCO to Atlanta, I missed my connection back toflint but was put up in the Doubletree Hotel and also given a free round trip (they even upgraded the free ticket to business class).

I will be on their non-stop to MCO tomorrow morning at 7:30 am

My understanding is that unless you purchase business class seats, you can't get your seat assignments until you check-in. You can do this online 24 hours before your departure and then print your own boarding passes. If you don't do online check-in, you have to check in at the airport and get your seating assignments there. I'll be able to do online check-in when we leave, but not for the return trip so I'm just planning to get to the airport early for those seat assignments.

HI
we flew airtran last April and volunteered our seats (4 of us) on the leg from Atlanta to Balt. We did find out after our seats were gone and the plane had left that the 2 round trip tickets each we were given in compensation were subject to capacity controls and black out dates. We have sons ages 13 & 15 and found out all of the dates we hoped to book were not available for the 'free' tickets.... I kept fighting this with airtran customer service since we were not given this info before they took our seats. I finally was able to get a name of a person in charge of customer relations, wrote to him and he agreed that we should have been given information about the limitation of the 'compensation tickets' ahead of time. We were given the option to book our tickets without restrictions.and will be using them next week for our Disney Cruise and in April for a trip to California. I am not sure if I would do it again knowing the fine print that they will enforce for the free tickets. For someone without kids bound by school calendars, it would be a nice bonus!

I flew RT from Orlando to BWI last year on Airtran, no complaints at all. This year, SOuthwest is giving them a run for their money, may the LOWEST price win!!! :earsboy:

I am so glad that you all posted your Airtran experiences.

I, with DH and DGS, age 13, am flying on Airtran from Philadelphia to MCO Feb 14. Usually we fly Continental from Newark. We have never flown Airtran before so you all have set my mind at ease.

Thanks!!

I have flown Airtran a few times and never business class. I was always able to choose my seats up to 24 hours before the flight. It doesn't matter if you are in business or not. I like Airtran better then Southwest and will always pay more to Airtran just to avoid SW.

Yes, what I meant is that business class can choose their seats when they book the flight. Everyone else has to wait until 24 hours prior to the flight time.
