Me & DH 40 and the three kids on their third trip, ages 11, 8 3/4, 7

This was a very spontaneous trip planned about 5 weeks in advance. DH said I could go anywhere I wanted, he probably was thinking more along the lines of a getaway for two. The kids kept asking if we decided where we were going yet. It was great to see the looks on their faces when I said we are going to WDW, all of us and staying at the Contemporary. My oldest son just kept saying "I refuse to believe it, I refuse to believe it"! After the events of 9/11 I wanted to cancel, I was terrified to fly. DH never wavered from us taking the trip. The kids showed no fear. Thanks to my real life friends and those on the CB boards, they helped me to get on that plane. I even looked into Amtrak or driving, but with such a short trip it just did not make sense. Since there were unfortunately so many cancellations we were able to switch our flights to the Tuesday night instead of 6 am Wednesday morning. I added another night onto the Contemp. for a rate of $208. The other four nights were at the AAA rate of $795. DH had reward points on his Diner Club card that paid for half of our original ressie. In total our 5 nights was costing us about $600.

The airport was pretty deserted when we got there Tuesday evening. I noticed a real lack of kids everywhere. Check-in included being hand searched and wanded, even the kids. We breezed right through. I noticed in the pre-boarding area that everyone was sizing everyone else up. Instead of people being in their own little world, everyone was looking around, kind of half smiling, saying hi howya doing? As we boarded DH said to the flight attendant, no bad guys today right? And she replied We'll be having none of that tonight. One of the stewards was a huge, huge, man and very built. That made me feel a little better. The plane was half empty and they said we could sit anywhere we wanted. We arrived in MCO, it was pretty empty also. We were a few minutes early so we gathered our luggage, and I packed very light, only 4 suitcases this trip. We walked back over to meet our Happy Limo driver. He looked a little worried, like he had missed us. He said to the kids "I've got a big surprise for you". I couldn't imagine what it would be, he pulled up in a white stretch limo with disco lights and stocked with sodas. The kids were beside themselves, since I had told them it was a budget trip, no limo like last time. It felt funny getting out at the grocery stop in a limo.

We arrived at the Contemporary. The lobby was - you guessed it - empty. DH asked if we could get an upgrade. I heard the CM on the phone say that yes we were repeat customers. She got off and said any view you want is yours. I thought MK but she changed my mind to the bay side view and I'm glad she did. Since MK only had fireworks on Saturday night. We got to our room, dropped our bags, went out on the balcony and like magic the Water Pageant began. What a way to start our trip. Of course my youngest had to ruin the moment by leaning over the railing and getting yelled at by her father. The room was the greatest. I'm so glad we stayed here, I almost let comments on the Resort Board change my mind. We usually get two rooms at the Moderates with my parents. This was our first solo family trip. The room was plenty big enough for all 5 of us. Having two queen beds was wonderful, DH and I slept like logs. I loved the bathroom layout, the huge closests, the balcony just everything. I never heard anyone from another room walk by or a toilet flush. I thought the decor was really funky and neat too. It doesn't look nearly as gaudy in person that it does from pictures. We were smack dab in the middle of the building overlooking Epcot to the right and the pool. I could yell to the kids from the balcony. Only a few steps from the elevator. I loved the talking elevator. For the first three days I laughed every time the doors opened. I just couldn't help myself. Being on the monorail line was the biggest timesaver. I think we've been ruined now from staying at the mods again!

Wednesday - We had 7:30 am for Chef Mickey's but were running late. I leaned over the balcony and saw the restaurant was 3/4 empty. We got there by 8 and were seated right away. I thought the food was a disappointment. The eggs were runny, the hash browns were chock full of onions and scallions. It just didn't appeal to me overall. Of course we were really there for the characters. We twirled napkins, got autographs and pictures. The kids told me DH told the waitress it was my birthday, but she never announced it which was fine by me. We left and walked over to the MK. A very nice walk. The weather all week was overcast and a few tiny drizzles here and there. Perfect for us, we don't like the heat. I stopped off at City Hall to get a birthday button. Goofy left a message for me to wish me a Happy Birthday. During the day just about every CM wished me a Happy Birthday and usually a Happy 18th Birthday! The CM's were so friendly this trip. We always start in Adventureland, went through the Swiss Family Treehouse and right onto Aladdin Magic Carpets no wait. Headed over to Jungle Cruise where the Captain offered to let me drive. Everyone was staring at me and I got a moment of shyness, very unlike me, so I said no. I'm so mad at myself now! I'm always telling the kids when somebody at Disney asks you to do something, you do it. Our captain was one of the best ever. There was a guy named Steve loading us and I said "Are you Safari Steve"? Well he must get this a lot, because he said NO rather snottily I thought. I dragged everyone into Tiki Room where we snagged one of Iago's red feathers on the way out. They fall down when he blows up. We did POC and headed to Splash Mountain, my middle son's favorite. Dh lost his prized Yankee Championship baseball hat on Chick-A-Pin hill. All morning no waits at all. We decided to take a break at the Diamond Horseshoe, a must do every trip for us. We sat down 10 min. before show time, front and center. A great show as usual. They had some of the little kids doing the funniest things, I think this was one of the best shows we have ever seen done here. My oldest son got picked on, he hates attention! After the show the whole cast came out and sang God Bless America, I stood up and so did most other people. I was crying. We finished up Liberty Square. I finally got to see the Country Bear Jamboree not during Christmas. I always love those claw marks on the floor. HOP was closed and the Liberty Belle was not running also. We had to get a FP for Peter Pan. We took one of the side paths from Cindy's Castle and found a very secluded empty snack stand. We got great ice cream/choc chip cookies and apple cobbler. Very yummy and then I realized I was at Sleepy Hollow. This was one of my must try places. Headed back to the Contemp. for a swim, love that monorail! The kids got to ride up front. The rest of the week, my youngest, Miss Pushy - would squeeze in the front and yell Excuse me, can we ride up front? They got to go twice and got their co-pilot licenses. FYI only 4 can fit, so me and DH took turns. That was very cool for the kids. After the swim, they loved the slide at the Contemp., we headed over to Epcot. I had the coveted 7:20 PS for Rose & Crown. My family is not patient waiting for fireworks or parades though. So we all decided not to wait. We got some fish and chips at the counter service. I'm not a big fish fan, but they were delish. We got to the courtyard behind UK about 10 minutes before the British Invasion and nobody was there. We grabbed benches front and center. A CM had a tough time convincing my two youngest to introduce the band. She was adorable, finally got them with bribery of chocolates. The show started and the crowd was still light. We love BI, they had everyone get up and dance Twist and Shout for the finale. When we were leaving we heard some yelling and commotion and DH said let's check it out. I'm glad we did, it was the World Showcase Players doing King Arthur and the Holy Grail. We are all Monty Python fans. This show was side splitting hysterical. It was so funny watching my kids do all the motions. The rest of the week they kept doing Knight's Salute, Grail, Grail, Grail - UH and yelling Rubbish! Go see this if you get a chance. At one point during all the UK fun I walked back over the the counter service to get napkins. I passed two women saying "I wonder where Epcot is? Do you think it is that big silver ball back there"? I shared the story with the CM's behind the counter, they were cracking up. For dessert we got pastries in France. They were just so-so. We grabbed mediocre seats for Reflections of Earth and headed back on the monorail.

Thursday morning we decided to do MK early entry. It really surprised me what a commando DH was during this trip. Usually he is the one saying let's relax and slow down. Every morning he was like EE let's move it!! We did Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. I stopped in Tink's Treasures, loved watching Tinkerbell fly around the room. We have never done Toontown except the Barnstormer. My youngest daughter got her pic and autograph with Cindy's two mice. My kids hate waiting in those character lines too. We got to the front of the rope drop for Toontown. We were a few rows back and my DH says OK kids we can beat these people with strollers! We quickly WALKED and were first in line to see Pooh, Tigger and Eyeore. I don't know if there was more than one room with other characters. Eyeore looked sad because nobody was going to him....so we said here we are Eyeore. Tigger started coughing in his costume, and I said are you okay and then we both started laughing and couldn't stop. We went through Minnie's house and the Barnstormer several times. Hopped the train back to Frontierland and went over to Tom Sawyer's Island. The kids tried to convince me they were too old for it, but I'm not! They had fun as usual. We had 11:10 PS for the Plaza Restaurant but they don't open until 11:30. I'm not quite sure if they ever had our name or not. This place was new for us and we loved it. The milkshakes are huge and yummy. I got the strawberry salad, wonderful and also gigantic. We sat in the little glassed in room. Our server was so nice, I asked him the difference between a ice cream float and ice cream soda and he couldn't think of the word then he cursed with a big smile on his face and DH and I just lost it laughing. I was thinking if he did that in front of the wrong family he would probably get in big time trouble. We took our picture with him, I like to do this when we get a great CM and he really was. We grabbed spots for the new parade and my parade hating kids loved it. Same old fight to save our spots as usual. Some family next to me were kneeling on my daughter's backpack with her snacks and sunglasses. Then they sat on my stuff. You have to keep your sense of humor! Left MK for ppol again. Could not find my daughter's swimsuit in the room. As I figured had happened, she didn't hang it up and it got tossed in the laundry. Amazingly we called and they had it. While we were on a roll, we called about the Splash Mountain hat and they had that at Central Lost and Found. It just amazes me when they find stuff and return it. We headed for Epcot after our swim and went to see British Invasion again. My oldest son really wanted to eat in Mexico so we did the counter service. Nice area to sit along the lake, this would be a great place to stake out for Reflections of Earth, but like I said we are not that patient. Did some attractions in Future World including Test Track twice. Before we began this trip we told each of the kids they had to ride something new. For my cautious middle son that was to be Test Track. He changed his mind and was making a scene pretty much crying. DH and I looked like the worst parents in the world, we said you are going that is final. Then we made bets as to when he would say "Can we do it again". We bribed him with anything from the gift shop, so we dropped big bucks in there on model cars. He loved it and in total rode it 6 times! Went home and watched Water Pageant from balcony again, checked out the gift shops at the Contemp. I got a great 100 years of Magic shirt with a big embroidery patch I never saw in the Parks.

Friday time for Epcot EE, are we nuts or what! Were the only family in the briefing room at Test Track, rode it 3 more times. Grabbed a bite at the Electric Umbrella and found the talking trash can. Breakfast sandwiches were good, french toast was kind of stingy in the portions. Got all three kids to go on HISTA, knocked off all the Future World stuff. When World Showcase opened we headed to the Norway bakery for cinnamon rolls, they have the best ones. I got rice cream, I love it. Walked around World Showcase, and I regret not doing the American Adventure, the kids were antsy to get to MGM. Took the Friendship launch, another first for us. Had lunch at Sci-Fi, a must do with the kids. Food was good and grabbed a stop back by the Backlot Express for the new Stars and Cars parade. My oldest son who acts so blase around characters flipped when R2 D2 came by. DH and I rode TOT. All three kids said they would do RNR until they saw the limos take off, they all said We're not going on it! Just as we were about to load it broke down, we got FP given to us for later. I'm glad we waited for them. Headed back to the resort and hit the Contemp. arcade. A big thumbs up from the kids. Grabbed the monorail and went to the Kona Cafe for a very late dinner. The dinner and presentation was very nice. DH got mushroom ravioli which he enjoyed. I got two appetizers, the chicken wings and crabcakes very good. For dessert the kids loved their kiddie cones and I got the tangerine creme brulee, lovely! We explored the lobby and decided the themeing here really did not appeal to us, although the pool looked cool. Hey and I did not like that smell just in the lobby!

Saturday - The kids want to return to MK and I tell them we must do EE on a Saturday. Now we are really burning the candles at both ends! We make it to EE and it is finally looking more crowded. We redo all the attractions they want to do. Grab breakfast at Tony's and the crowds are pouring in, some kind of special Annual Passholder day I think. We take the bus to MGM, spend the afternoon there. Do the One Man's Dream, loved it. My Mom spoke to Walt Disney on the phone when she worked as an operator BTW! Did WWTBAM, no real line, even though we get FP we get in next show. The guy who used dial a stranger actually got someone on the Backlot Tour that he knew. Got to see Four for a Dollar before B&B Show, love them. After MGM we head to EPCOT, long lines to get in with bag searches. We eat at Mexico again and Norway for dessert with one more rice cream. We squeeze in one last Test Track ride and get on The Land which we had previously missed. We spent 15 1/2 hours in the parks this day and the kids kept up beautifully and had a blast. We get one last ride up front in the monorail and see the MK fireworks as we are driving by. Beautiful.

Sunday we get the stretch limo again and head back on a full flight. Good to see more crowds over the weekend and airports looking more normal. I don't think I will ever complain about lines again! We had a great trip, I'm so glad we went. Thanks everyone for your words of encouragment and God Bless America and everyone serving our country. Thanks for reading! Apologies for typos!!

Great trip report. I love apple cobbler. Where is that placed next to Cindy's Castle? What a surprise to get into the stretch limo. Sounds like so much fun. We will be leaving in 15 days and counting..

WOW! What full days. The Contempory pool is my DD's favorite. She loves the slide.

sounds great, happy birthday and you have a wonderful husband...thats the best present i ever heard of... what will you do for his birthday??????

Sleepy Hollow is in between the Hall of Presidents and Legend of the Lion King. It is right at the end of that path coming from the Castle.

For DH's birthday I gave him a 40th birthday party, which he came home early and ruined the surprise! I think he figured the trip to WDW would be easier than trying to plan a party, since he knew I would do all the planning. It was a great trip, I still can't believe he went for the idea. I know secretly he loves it as much as I do (well maybe not as much) but just won't admit it. He was so excited to get his picture with Tigger!

It really sounds like it was a magical trip for your 40th!

Thank you for taking the time to post your magical trip report!

What typos? You really made every minute work for you, Kallison. They must have a new menu at the Plaza because I'm sure I've never heard of strawberry salad. I must try it. So glad you stayed at the Contemporary. As you know, it's my very favorite for the reasons you mentioned, especially the two queens and sofa bed, and the fantastic bathroom situation. You didn't mention characters swimming in the pool or playing in the wonderful arcade so either you missed them or they're cutting back a little. Excellent trip report, though you made me tear up when you mentioned your trip to the Diamond Horseshoe. So, when are you going back?

thanks, Thanks, THANKS!!! for all the details! Makes it easy to relive every moment!

Am hoping for a 50th birthday trip to Disneyland in a few years as it opened the year I was born! I can pretend all the festivities are just for me!

Sounds like a major trip, so glad you and the family had a wonderful time!!!!

Thanks for posting - I really enjoyed your reports. We just booked my birthday trip for Dec 13-18. I have always wanted to go on my BDay but with it being so close to XMas we never did. We just canceled a Sept trip and then decided why not go for my Bday!

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. Kay - no characters in the pool. In fact the one night we were the only ones in the pool. This was not a good thing, the lifeguards kept yelling at my kids for every infraction. They were just too excited to slow down! I have no clue when our next trip will be, the kids missed two days of school and the two boys got hammered with homework. I don't think we will be able to squeeze in the WDW trips during middle school. DH has a conference in October 2003, so that could be a maybe.

Kathy - on your birthday trip make sure you get a button in City Hall. It was a lot of fun. I felt goofy about wearing it for about 10 minutes, then I enjoyed it.

Kaybird - cool name!

I was at Haunted Mansion... sorry. There are now three guys named Steve, Steven, or Stephen at Jungle Cruise who aren't Safari Steve.

Hi Steve, looked for you at the Haunted Mansion also, but was almost afraid to ask! He got real annoyed when I asked if he was Safari Steve. I looked for Uncle Kyle too but didn't find him either. Maybe next trip!

Great trip report!!! We are staying at the Contemporary in April, and I loved all your details! Thanks again.

Thanks for the report Kallison. You certainly made the most of the time spent there. I could certainly identify with a lot of the things you did. I also liked the food in Mexico.

Adam

Thanks Big Dude, I enjoyed your report too. My DH was a maniac with the early entry. That totally surprised me because he is usually the one urging me to slow down and relax. I HATE to relax at Disney - LOL! He always wants to eat too and that is so annoying! But this trip he was the go-go-go guy. Maybe he was trying to make me happy on my 40th!

K-teacher have a nice trip. You should read Big Dude's trip report, he has some nice Contemporary pictures.

Great report! Thanks for posting. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your meal at Chef Mickey's. We had breakfast there this past January and we loved it. You also made me want to stay at the Contemporary!! :D

Beth

Wow, our husbands are wonderful....
Mine just surprised me, too. He said he is taking our family to the Cont. as well for our
10 yr. anniversary...I was so shocked because he loves to save money and the cont.
costs quite a bit more than all stars, but he said he wanted to show me that he loves
me more now than ever and it has been my dream to stay at a monorail resort...
isnt he great..

reading your trip reports makes me that much more excited
thanks for sharing

OHHHHHHHH - that is so nice. You are going to love the Contemp., have a great trip.
