My 2 year old chipped his front tooth - now what? :(

I'm kind of bummed about it, too (though I know it's not his adult tooth). He was playing with a truck and fell on it face first. His front tooth is now chipped.

Aside from waiting for the tooth to fall out when he gets older, is there anything else that can be done? I'm not sure taking him to a dentist will accomplish anything. I just feel bad that his cute smile is now chipped!

You may want to take him to the pedodontist to make sure that the nerve isn't exposed and while there the dentist can smooth it out, although it will probably smooth out on its own. Baby teeth often do. He is so cute no one will notice that little chip.

Really, there isn't much you can do. More than likely, it will wear down a bit over time and become less noticeable. Happened to my little one, too. Sorry.

as long as it doesn't hurt him or isn't so sharp that it is cutting the inside of his mouth there isn't a reason to do anything with it.

Just a word to the wise he is a boy and if he is having a happy, active normal boys life a little chipped tooth is just the first of a long line of mishaps. You probably won't have a picture of him from now until oh I don't know I'll let you know when it happens without a bruise, cut or bump of some sort !

Just make sure you keep an eye on it. If it develops a white bubble above it then it might get an abscess and require pulling. My son chipped his when he was 2 and when he was 3 we had to have it removed for this very reason. Trauma to a tooth can result in this. Oh and also he is adorable!

Nothing you can really do other than have a dentist peek at it and smooth it out. I have been through this with my DD7 only MUCH worse. She fell and broke BOTH her top middle teeth and she wasn't even 2 yet. They weren't just broken, they were also pushed up into her gums. Eventually they came back down but they did NOT look good even after being smoothed out a bit. Fast forward and she now has BIG beautiful teeth.

Awww, poor baby. I agree, first of many bumps, but you might want a pedodontist to check and smooth out so it won't be so sharp. Our lil DGS fell on a chair in PS and chipped his. The ped smoothed it out, said if it had nerve damage it would turn grey - which it did for a year. Amazingly it turned back to white a year later. Thankfully never affected his pernament tooth at all. Best wishes to your cute lil sweetie, he's adorable!

Absolutely take him to the dentist, preferably a pediatric dentist. He'll check for any possible nerve damage, and he can smooth out the rough edge. While it may not seem rough to you if you touch it with your finger, if he happens to fall again with his tongue between his teeth, the damage could be worse if it isn't smoothed out.

the same thing happened to my DD14 when she was 2. she tripped as we were walking into the mall (I was just running in and right back out so I didn't take the stroller..big mistake). Anyway, she landed face first on the tile floor and chipped her front tooth, no blood just a few tears. I took her to the dentist and he said the tooth was fine and he smoothed it out so it wouldn't cut her tongue. I watched the tooth for a few days or so to make sure it didn't turn gray or black because that would indicate the tooth had nerve damage and was "dead" and would need to come out. The tooth never changed color and she never complained about it, it fell out when she was 5 or 6 and the permanent tooth that came in after showed no ill effects of the fall.

Aww, poor baby. Hopefully it will be nothing more than a great family story--in about 10 years. Christian was 3 when he met up in the hall with our standard poodle in the dark. Both of them lost teeth in that little dust up. Oh, well. What are ya gonna do? Take him to the dentist anyway, just to make sure everything really is all right.

My poor oldest child was plagued with weak and awful baby teeth from the time they popped out. He actually had "veneers" on about 4 of his baby teeth. Our insurance covered it all, so Im not sure about the actual cost. the size of the tooth (veneer) was larger than a normal baby tooth; but it was the better option at the time. A couple of veneers had to be replaced, a couple stayed on until the babies fell out. The process was painless- a clear mold filled with white goo was placed over the tooth and a u/v light hardened it. I was totally amazed!

I let dh take ds13 with him to deer camp when he was barely 1-and he came home with fangs. He fell going down the front steps, and chipped both front teeth. I took him to the dentist, but he said as long as it wasn't hurting him he wouldn't do anything. He never even mentioned smoothing them out. I was so happy when his front teeth finally fell out (in K) and I didn't have to look at them any more! Still gets my blood pressure up when I think about it. I know it wasn't dh's fault, but I hated the way the teeth looked!

This happened to me at Disney World! Well, in an off-site hotel. I was 4 and my parents wrapped me up in a pool towel with arms tight on the inside. I stumbled and couldn't get my arms out to balance or break my fall. Smack on the side of a pool chair, teeth first. Chipped one front tooth - I don't think anything needed to be done. When it started getting loose (age 5 or 6), it turned an icky shade of gray. Otherwise, everything was fine.

Just from our experience, I would probably find a good pediatric dentist, just to make sure. DS flat out knocked out a tiny brand new baby tooth when he was 6 months old, we were told that a dentist wouldn't be needed, but we found out a year or so later that they *might* have been able to do something. (our problem was that we couldn't find the baby tooth, and thought he had swallowed it, so it couldn't be replaced (something that is possible in some cases with baby teeth), so it seemed extra pointless to find a dentist) It's been a LONG 6 years without that tooth, but the adult one is just about to pop through, woo!

But anyway, maybe in a couple days he could get to a dentist (might take longer than that to find a GOOD one, who will encourage you to come back with him and who is conservative, meaning sparing, in his/her treatment plan), see if there's nerve damage, etc.

Oh that's just the worst, isn't it? Poor DS had a fall like that at 3; he was trying on mittens at the store, and they always have them tethered together. DH put a hat on DS, and DS hated the feeling of the hat, yanked himself away from DH, and went backwards. Couldn't put his hands out. Awful awful. (got a head injury from it, too, with an ambulance ride and everything)

Glad you were OK! Bet you never made that sort of "unavailable hands/arms" mistake with your kids if you have them!

My DS chipped a front tooth around 9 mos. He's 2 1/2 now. I think it's kind of cute, gives him character.. DD had a tooth knocked about at 5 yrs, still hasn't grown in yet (she's 7 now). That never-ending big space bothers me more....

The chip will make a great story later on and I think the pictures will be just as adorable for having the imperfection, as long as the chip is not up far enough to open the tooth to infection just leave it be and consider it his new nickname.
