i've been dying to try this project for a while, i finally sat down and did it...i am very proud of my accomplishment but there are a few things i did wrong that i will know better for next time, first i hated using modge podge glue (going to have to find an alternative) and 2ndly my seams aren't lined up (i wasn't paying attention) but hey its my 1st time......these cans can be used for just about anything, momentos, piggy banks, time capsules, party favors, anything you collect, etc. you get the idea hope you like

its awesome! great job.

i have to say that i've never mod podged mine. i don't like the way it looks. just my opinion of course.
since i started making them it has been my end of year gift to the teachers and they LOVE them!

oh no offense taken honestly i HATED using it, so what alternative do i have? double sided tape?
what do you use??
and if its easier then using the mod podge i will be doing much much more of them, and the end of the year gift for the teachers is an excellent idea.
got any pics of yours??
and thank you for the compliment!!!!!!!!!!!!

The red double sided sticky tape. It works the best. Make sure you rough up the can a little with sandpaper or an emery board where you are putting the tape. Clean up the can and then apply the tape.

I tried the modge podge on one of mine, but I hated using it. The look was cool, but a pain to dry.

I like yours.

VERY CUTE! I just used my atg tape. It worked fine. And I recommend cheating with the seams - if they don't line up - stick an embellishment over it. lol

I also used the red line tape. It worked great for me. I also used it to put ribbon on the top and bottom of the can. I just never mod podged mine at all.
I did the clip board project too and put the mod podge on and it never dried. It was way too tacky. So I started over and used a spray on sealer by krylon. I got it at michaels. Worked great. These are always a hit!

I liked the modge podge on mine to serve as a water barrier to the paper. And I put ribbon over my seam. ;) An altered paint can is also a good gift container for a baby gift.

Nice job!! Love it!! You inspire me to get back to making these, as I haven't done them in a while. I was on a kick for a while (especially Teacher Christmas gifts) but haven't made any lately.

I use a scrapbooking glue and it works fine. The paper can't be too heavy, though. I will have to try the red line tape!

I also decorate the cover of the can and include a paint can opener as the "key".

One of my favorite cans was a gift I did for my SIL. It was a pedicure-in-a-can. I decorated in pastels with embellishments and then filled with goodies for a do at home pedicure.

Can i get the red line tape in the craft stores?

can i ask why the emery board? is it suppose to make the tape stick better? just curious.

yes you can. In the scrapbook section with the rest of the adhesive. I know Michael's has it but I'm not 100% sure about ACMoore.

Yes, it helps give the adhesive something to stick to.

Awesome thank you soooooooooooo much for the tips!
now i can't wait to start another one, will have to do that after our disney trip

By taking a flat smooth surface and roughing it up, you give some texture and extra area for the tape's glue to adhere too. All those tiny little grooves are good. That trick works for a lot of super smooth surfaces that you want to stick together. :)

I love the handles on the larger cans. Bamb makes pretty out of plain. :lovestruc

Awe thanks!

tying the ribbons took the longest. You use several spoons of ribbon. I think the pirates can was 3-5 spools. It depends on how full you want it.
I sat and did it while watching TV, took about 2 hours.
