My 12 year old son wants to dress up as Peter Pan to match his sister at WDW

We are headed to disney world June 18-25. When my son found out I was dressing up his little three year old sister in varying costumes he begged me to let him dress up as Peter Pan during her Tinkerbell dress up day so they can match.

Doesn't Disney World have a dress code for older kids such as teens and adults? I would hate for him to dress the part and then get embarrassed at the entrance if they say no to him.

He is 5' 2" and is 12 years old.

Advice is appreciated!

There are ways to dress up without looking too costumey. He could wear a green tunic and Pan hat with khaki shorts and I bet nobody would bat an eye. I see some creative non-costumes at Disneyland all the time.

What about a Peter Pan tshirt. A quick search on etsy turned up a few options.

I know I will probably get flamed, but outside of a Halloween party or special event, there is no way I would let a 12 year old dress up in costume (girl or boy). I agree that a tshirt or peter pan type hat with khaki shorts would be great.

There are ways to get in the spirit that are much more age appropriate IMHO.

He can probably do a Peter Pan inspired outfit, but not a costume. It is against the rules for adults to dress up in a way where they can be confused as characters, and a 12 year old boy is an ideal Peter Pan. They'd probably hire him if it weren't for child labor laws! J/k

I agree. They might not let him in either. He's an adult ticket at that age and at 5'2 he's taller than me.
Maybe something like disney bounding (I think that's what it's called) would be better than a costume.

Thank you all for your input! My iffyness was on target. I'll just have to tell him it's against the rules. It's ok though...I'm sure he'll get over it.

He could wear a green t-shirt, khaki shorts and maybe a peter-pan type hat. It's not a costume but would still make for cute pictures with his sister.

While trying to be a character look alike may be against the rules, dressing in an outfit INSPIRED by the character is not only NOT against the rules, there are plenty of adults who do it.

I am posting the link (I hope I do it right) to the disboards thread on cosplay/ disneybounding: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3250443

Check it out. I think it's great that he wants to dress up and is able to have fun and if he were my child I would absolutely encourage him to do so! The thread will give you great ideas about what is acceptable. Go for it!

A 12-year-old is still a child in my eyes, and I'd find it sad to crush his spirit by telling him it's again the rules. While I wouldn't encourage him to wear a full-blown costume, I'd allow him to wear clothing that closely resembles Peter Pan's. For instance : a regular brown fedora hat with a red feather glued on it, a green henley t-shirt with a brown belt over it, and probably brown shorts or pants. It would look like a costume, without being one ;)

Here is a pic of my 16 year old niece dressed up in a Tinkerbell costume that we bought at Disney. She bought it to wear at Halowe'en back home, but since we're pretty die hard fans (and children at heart) she decided to wear it to MK and get her pic taken with Tink!

On the way to meet Tink, who did we meet up with but Peter Pan!! It was one of the best character encounters we've ever had as a family. He spent about 10 minutes chatting us all up, and was AMAZED that Tink had grown to real human size and that he'd run into her in the middle of MK (it was off on a side path so there were no others around, it was the coolest interaction with any character, ever).

When she met Tink, the "real" Tink said "Um, excuse me, I'm not sure who turned YOU into a fairy, but they put your wings on upside down. Here, let me fix them!" It was pretty hilarious.

No CMs gave us a hard time, and at no point did they tell us she shouldn't be wearing the costume in the park.

I'd say go for it, as long as he isn't trying to represent himself as the real peter pan. Let him have his day!!

I would not tell him it's against the rules - since he'll see other older kids dressed in costumes, he would feel that you weren't honest with him or else feel like those kids were breaking the rules.

I'd encourage an inspired by costume though. I highly doubt he'd be very comfortable in long tights all day in the heat. But brown shorts/green shirt and hat with feather would be great and would look good in photos.

If you feel like you would not want him to dress up in a full-blown costume, maybe go for the "uncomfortable in heat angle" and it's easy to change a toddler into another outfit in the middle of a park if it gets too hot, but harder to change an almost adult. Plus, if you have dinner plans outside the park, that's one more thing to have to pack with you during the day.

Yes. It is not against the rules. The disney rule says adults can't dress up. A 12 year-old is not an adult. A 12 year-old girl could go to BBB and get a full princess makeover.

They're only young once. Find out what he had in mind when he said he wants to dress like peter pan. It may not be the full costume with tights.

Disney considers people aged 10 and over adults for theme park ticket purposes. While many of us many consider a 12 year old a child, there is no way of knowing what would happen would he try and enter the parks in a full blown costume. There is the very real possibility of him being not allowed to enter.

Disney-bounding is the way to go! An outfit inspired by Peter Pan, but not a costume.

Good point.

:thumbsup2
I would be concerned that they would have a problem with him dressed in a full costume and not let him enter the park.

OP, I just want to say how sweet I think it is that your ds wants to do this with his sister. My dses wouldn't even wear a Disney shirt our last trip  and they'd never do anything like that for their sister. He sounds like a great big bro!
