There is a huge sellout, so whenever you are up. It was so crowded last November on a thursday night, it was like middle of summer with people 6 rows deep for the parade... they sell alot of tickets!

Are you planning to go on a particularly busy day? If so you might want to call asap, but I don't think most days sell out that fast.

We went in early December. You couldn't buy tickets at the gate on the night of the event (it was sold out), but I bought mine about 1 week before online and there were still tickets then.

I think it depends upon which night you want to go. A few of the busier weekend nights may sell out sooner than other nights, but in the years I've been following this subject, it sounds like many people have waited until they actually arrive, or at most a couple weeks before they go, to buy tickets and had no problems. We haven't done MVMCP, but when we did MNSSHP, we got our tickets a couple weeks ahead. If you must go Thanksgiving weekend, then you'll want to get them a bit earlier, but I doubt they'll all sell out tomorrow! Especially with the new, much higher than last year's prices. That should slow demand a bit.
