Just recently, I'm noticing a musty smell after anyone takes a shower in our master bathroom. Our house is about 25 years old with contractor grade tub/surround. I'm soooo praying that it's not mold. The smell goes away about a hour after the shower is over. And of course there is not a exhaust fan in the bathroom. Dh thinks we can just caulk the seams of the surround and leave it at that. Has anyone had the smell? How hard is it to replace a tub and surround as a diy?

I wouldn't think caulking would take care of the problem.

When we remodeled our bathroom, we tore out the walls and the ceiling and started from scratch. There was a ton of mold up inside the old ceiling. It was pretty disgusting.

If it were me, and I thought there was mold (especially considering that you can smell it), I would want to somehow get rid of that mold.

Good luck to you!

Caulking will stop more water from leaking behind the shroud, but it won't correct the problem - which could be mold, rot, leaking drain, etc. Those problems could cause worse problems down the road.

If I were you I would first install an exhaust fan, then tear off the shroud to see what is going on behind it. It isn't all that hard to install a shroud, but I think you would probably need someone pretty handy to fix the backing behind it, especially if there was rot or mold.

Good luck!

We have an old house (1900). When we redid our bathroom, we took everything out. And there was mold in the walls. Caulking won't work...it might mask the situation for awhile ..but it won't solve the problem.

Can you pull the cover off of the drain? There could be a clump of hair that is caught in the drain. Warning: It WON'T be pretty!

Does the water smell this way or is it the bathroom? I read a story about a musty smell in the bathroom and it turned out to be a snake infestation. The smell was from the well water.:rotfl2:

Not to scare you or anything.:flower3:

The bolded just screams MOLD.

I think you would need to gut the bathroom as the mold is going to be everywhere. When you do that you need to add an exhaust fan.
