MUST HAVE foods on the Wonder?

I was reading the Passporter menu for the Wonder last night. Frankly, none of it sounds very good, but I know it must be.

I'm making a list now, what are the MUST HAVE FABULOUS foods on the Wonder and at which restaurants?

Jennifer

P.S. How are the kids meals? I like my kids to eat pretty healthy, fresh foods.

Well, I may be in the minority, but I think fod on the DCL cruises is average, generally, except for Palo's. But here's my list, for what it's worth:

-- tuna steak at Palo's
-- filet mignon in any restaurant, but especially in Palo's
-- coconut-crusted trout on Pirate night
-- the Eggs Julia at Palo's brunch -- it's eggs benedict except it has smoked salmon instead of a meat poduct
-- the jumbo shrimp anywhere
-- the crawfish at the Topsider's seafood buffet
-- the buffalo mozzarella at Palo's
-- the chicken fingers at Pluto's Doghouse . . . don't ask me why, but they are really good
-- the Mickey head ice cream bars
-- the All Hands on Deck platter from room service was our favorite snack, and we ordered it every day

The lobster tail is also very good, but we didn't have lobster tail night on our 9/27 sailing. :( My server, Roberto, had to console me and begged my forgiveness. :D

Also, I was VERY happy to see that they changed the kids' menus since the last time we cruised -- all of the kids' meals now come with veggies, and they always have the staples PLUS the meals du jour now. In the past, it was basically just chicken fingers, pizza, and mac n cheese. This time, my dd2 had a great pasta in a light alfredo sauce with veggies mixed in; my dd1 had meatloaf with brocolli and cauliflower, as well as steak and vegetables one night. We also ordered a chicken breast with grilled veggies off of the adult menu for both kids one night when I couldn't take seeing another plate of mac n cheese on the table. Each of the kids had a fruit platter for an appetizer every night (dd2) or the soup (dd1). Our waiter was also very good about bringing dd1 a salad off of the adult menu each night, and if she saw me eating something she liked, we often had him bring another one for her.

My best and favorite snack find this time around (other than the All Hands on Deck Platter) was the Edy's fruit bars at Scoops -- they are frozen fruit bars and about 30 calories apiece. Very yummy, very refreshing, and no guilt. We eat them at home, too, and my kids were excited to see them on the cruise because they know they are on the "mommy won't be angry if you eat them" list. :)

Yum! I just got back from our 3 night Wonder cruise and I need to hit the gym hard with all the extra cruise pounds I gained! I thought the food was quite good.

I had the roasted chicken at both Tritans and Parrot Cay--very good. The veggies were great too:)

DH loved the ribs at Parrot Cay and had chicken wings for an app and thought they were great.

The mango soup (served cold) was a big hit at our table at Parrot Cay---actually one of our table mates had them mix it with soft serve for his dessert!

I had the sirloin steak at Animator's--that was OK. I usually order filet mignon, not sirloin, so that maybe had something to do with it.

The honey glazed (?) salmon at Animator's was incredible. I wish I would have ordered that. There was also a sweet cream of squash soup that was excellent!

For desserts, I do not like chocolate so here are the non chocolate options I loved: honey/caramel apple tart at Tritons, LOVED the strawberry short cake at Animators, the lemon merange (sp?) at Parrot Cay was OK--so Ralph replaced it with the strawberry shortcake:)

Beach Blanket buffet had good strawberry cheesecake and dessert crepes. They also had good Mac N Cheese and I'm not a mac n cheese person at all.

Get the strawberry shortcake! It is so good!

Cold mango soup.....SO refreshing!

I was disappointed in the Strawberry shortcake - which was far too dry. Maybe it was an off night - or maybe a difference in taste. It was the only dessert I had that wasn't good.

At Tritons I had the garlic tenderloin, the camerbert fritters, the grand marinier souffle. The fritters weren't to my taste, but everything else was great.

At Parrot Cay I had the potstickers, which were good, and ribs that don't seem to be on the currently posted menu. Good but not wonderful. Whatever I had for dessert isn't on the menu either, currently - and I can't remember what it was. It was good though. Something chocolate.

At AP, the lobster and shrimp wrapper was really good. So was the salmon. As I said, the Strawberry Shortcake didn't do it for me. But the double fudge chocolate cake and cheesecake were both good (we shared some desserts).

They've also changed the "best of" menu since we sailed.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm writing them down and getting hungry.

Marcy, Thanks for explaining the changes in the Kids Menu. It sounds much better to me now.

How large (how many does it feed) is the Cheese and cracker platter from Room service. I'm wondering if we'll need 2 of them for the 4 of us.

How old are your kids? The AHOD was a nice snack for me and the girls (ages 4 and 1.5), but we easily could have eaten 2 of them if they were in front of us.

My kids also liked the uncrustables that they serve in room service -- we kept them in baggies in the fridge for snacks.

My boys are 5 turning 6 that week and 3 turning 4 and they can PUT AWAY some cheese and crackers. I guess we'd better get two.
How much should I tip for the AHOD?

You MUST order the Big Island Cookie, from room service

They're "free" except for the tip.. just give the guy $2-3

The cookie is soft, big, and VERY VERY VERY VERYYYY Good:bounce: :chat: pirate: ::yes::

Souffle, any shrimp (esp. the shrimp appetizer in Lumiere's/Triton's), escargot, pizza @ Palo, calamari @ Palo, and the breakfast breads @ Palo are my favorites.

And I dig the cheese platter from room service too.

Sam

There was a fruit tart at the embarktion lunch in Parrot Cay that was scrumptuous!

My kids ordered off of the adult menu almost every night. They love steak and salmon.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED:
Cold Strawberry Soup (Parrot Cay embarkation lunch)
White Chocolate Mousse (Tritons) YUMMMMMMMM
Strawberry Crepes at the tropical night midnight buffet (at 11)
Encrusted Veal Chop w/rissoto (very rich) never had veal before
Honey Glazed Salmon (Animators Palate)
Honey Glazed Ribs and Wings (Parrot Cay)
Celebration Cake (Chefs around the World)

Stay away from the Chicken caccitore at Palo brunch. It was skinned brown meat (not what my dad expected) a little yucky and the chicken at Animators Palate was also covered in skin and brown meat. HOWEVER, we cruised between 2 hurricanes and I think they didn't get a chance to really stock up. We were right between 2 hard hits to Port Canveral.

When we went we ordered to All Hands on Deck for just DH and me;) We also love the fresh fruit bowl from room service. It stayed good in the fridge overnight and was a nice quick snack in the morning while getting ready for breakfast. We also love the White Chocolate Raspberry Dome from Tritons, we each at one and took 2 back to the room with us. I also had a cheese appetizer I think from Triton's, it was a deep fried breaded cheese, very yummy.

I'm not sure if there's much difference between the menu on the Wonder and the Magic. (We always sail on the Magic.) One thing to remember is that the servers and hosts are incredibly accommodating, so if there's nothing on the menu that your kids will like, let them know and they'll find it. Most nights my 6yo ate roasted salmon or chicken with steamed broccoli and cauliflower and Mickey pasta. For lunch both kids loved the hummus and pita squares in Lumiere's; I asked for it at dinner one night in Animator's Palate and they got some for us.

Our biggest snack food when we cruise is the All Hands on deck (fruit, cheese, nuts, crackers) platter from stateroom service. I always try to feed my boys a protein filled snack about an hour before our dinner seating so they don't load up on bread before their entrees arrive.

The one food rule we won't break for vacation is no food dyes and no corn syrup, so the Edy's bars were out, but there were lots of other desserts that we all enjoyed.

I don't remember having that white chocolate dessert at Lumiere's, I'll have to look for it. And to the person who mentioned escargot, was that at Palo's?

Mmmmm...
A lot of good things mentioned here.
My favorite entree (much to my own surprise) was the vegetarian curry I ordered at Animator's the last evening--I'm not a vegetarian, but WOW was that delicious! My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Other favorites--chocolate Mickey waffles at Beach Blanket every morning, and of course Mickey ice cream bars (served with whipped cream and sprinkles!) for dessert after dinner.

I was impressed with the kids' meals. My 2-year-old, who is very picky, was happy to eat chicken strips and fruit every evening, but there was also nice variety for my 4-year-old, who enjoys trying different things. He had the "special of the day" kids' meal every night, I believe. He loved the Mickey pasta alfredo!

Just thought of another thing my husband loved on both the Magic and on the Wonder when he sailed last month--empanadas. On the Magic we had them at Topsiders the first day, and on the Wonder I think he said he had them at Parrot Cay.

The *short cake* was a little crisp on the outside, which was different but I really enjoyed it. Sometimes when I order strawberry shortcake the cake part gets soggy and I don't like that. I just thought it was incredible!

One thing NOT to order from room service: chicken noodle soup. I ordered it one night for a snack and it just tasted like salt broth. Yuk. Also, no chicken in it and I couldn't even detect a hint of chicken flavor. DH ordered grilled ham n cheese sandwich and a turkey sandwich another night--both were good.

Tomato soup is really yummy. The accompanying grilled cheese was, understandably, a little limp.

From Tritons I really liked the fried camembert, and the lamb was good too.

From AP I liked the squash soup and the veal chop was great.

From Parrot Cay I loved the mango soup and the mixed grill was also pretty good

then on the best of night, I had the snapper and that was really good.

I didn't get wowed by my desserts, but the chocolate chip cookies I got at the pool were really good.

The jumbo shrimp are great.

My DH said that the chicken fingers from Plutos were really good too.

I did like that the kids menu had changed. My DS pretty much stuck to the old faithful of mac n cheese, but DD had steak one night, grilled pork chops, turkey, and I can't remember what else. I do remember that she had mashed potatoes every night. :)
