I hope that I can get some pointers here. We are staying on site for the first time ever in September as we bought into DVC last fall. The whole concept of ADRs stumps me as we never had to worry about this before.
Here are a few details:
We are a couple, no kids who enjoy good food. I will have a Disney Pass for the duration of my stay, but DH will not. Therefore we are really only looking at the resorts and DTD. We will be staying at AKL for three nights on a cash reservation before going on a Disney Cruise and once we come back we will stay at OKW for 8 nights on points. We won't have the Dining Plan for either stay. The only meals that I know I definitely want to do is a dinner and a breakfast at Boma while we are at AKL.
Could anybody give me a few pointers as to must do ADRs. What restaurant can we simply not afford to miss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are staying at AK Lodge, I have to recommend Boma for dinner. That is my favorite on-property buffet. I've heard that breakfast is really good too there, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Jiko gets rave reviews, but it's not one of my must-do's.

Other resort restaurants I really enjoy are; California Grill at the Contemporary, Citricos at the Grand Floridian, Artist Point at the Wilderness Lodge, Ohana and Kona at the Polynesian, Flying Fish at the Boardwalk, and Wolfgang Puck Cafe at DTD.

Our family must do is a Chef Mickey's breakfast. It has characters and isn't the quitest place in the world if that matters to you. Food is good and plentiful and we love the atmosphere.

DTD Wolfgang Puck Express is awesome. I love his 1/2 Rosemary roasted chicken w/mashed potatoes.

For a Character meal, this is by far my family's favorite place to eat Breakfast. Our favorite dinner place is Whispering Canyon Cafe. We love the humor!!!!

After having looked through the menus, I think the ones that I would really like to try is Boma (knew this already), Chef Mickey's, Ohana. I am also really curious about the Gospel Brunch at House of Blues, but can't seem to find much information about this one.
I had a look at the menu for Wolfgang Puck Express and I think we will definitely end up there. The Rosemary Rotisserie Chicken is definitely something for my DH and I am a bit of a meatloaf connoisseur.

I am allergic to bananas and I realized that the desert at Ohana features bananas. Are they pretty good about catering for people with food allergies? Can I have them add a remark to my reservation about the allergy?

yes you can. Tell the cm when you make the adr. Then remind the cm who checks you in at Ohana. (I think, but not sure, that sometimes the chef will come to your table and talk to you)

The Chef does come to the table which is awesome amazing! I have allergies and they have worked beautifully around it. O'hana is great, Boma, Cape May Cafe, Le Cellier, Garden Grill, Wolfgang Puck Express, even the pizza is pretty good, Rose and Crown for Illuminations,

Thanks for all your help and advice. This is going to be a very different kind of vacation for us and I start to get just a little nervous.
Having a relatively rare allergy has caused no end of bother in the past. I am glad that Disney are relatively enlightened when it comes to food allergies.

Must do's for us, in order :)

Yachtsman
LeCellier
Teppanyaki (think its Teppan Edo now in Japan @ Epcot)
Kona Cafe
Chef Mickey's
Ohana breakfast

I agree that Boma at AKL is great. We always enjoy this. I also enjoy Olivia's restaurant at OKW. Once you leave these two, I like Chef Mickey's at CR, O'Hana's at Poly and Kona's at Poly. We also enjoyed the Concourse Steak House at CR but I believe that is no longer. I'm not as familiar with DTD other than the fact that we love the Earl of Sandwich (but obviously not for a nice sit down). My sister loves the House of Blues and my son ate at Bongo's two years ago and enjoyed that. There are plenty of other places to eat without going into the parks. YBC and BW have some nice places too.

BTW - you're really going to love your DCL!!!!!

It was my plan to do all brand new places to eat for our upcoming trip. i got looks from everyone (even my dh who is not going this time) asking what do you mean no coral reef. I rearranged a few things, and we were able to book it for lunch on our last day there. Even if you do not like fish they have a great variety, and the food is delicious. the entrance is completly hidden on the side of nemo and friends. even though it's not on the ddp, I would recommend getting the lobster bisque. It is worth spending the money on.
