I've been totally obsessed with the music of Hamilton. Love the modern take and the genius of Lin-Manuel Miranda. I think I've heard the soundtrack at least 100 times and now feel I need something new (gasp!). Any other musicals out there with a fairly modern feel (No Hello Dolly or Oklahoma). I want AWESOME music! Rent? My family is going crazy with my Hamilton obsession so I need to change it up.

If you haven't already listened to it, the other Lin-Manuel Miranda musical, In The Heights would be a good choice.

My other favorite lately to listen to is Dear Evan Hansen

Do you like Sara Bareilles? Maybe sample a few songs from "Waitress" to see if you like that show? Sondheim musicals are timeless -- maybe start with the revival of "West Side Story"? (The Bernstein music is incredible!) Lin-Manuel Miranda did some work on the lyrics on that one.
Try asking in this thread: The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway -- you're sure to get lots of suggestions!

I did not know there was another Lin-Manuel Miranda musical! Thanks! I've heard of Evan Hansen and know a song or two. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you! I'll check out Waitress. I'm a violinist and have played the music of West Side Story-incredible! I will look into Sondheim musicals-any in particular one? Thanks for the thread suggestion.

Agree with most of the above Some that haven’t been mentioned that I like to listen to:

Come From Away
Six
Moulin Rouge

One of my favorites is American Idiot (the Broadway cast album). I became obsessed with it a few years ago when my son performed it in. I saw it 6 times in one weekend and got hooked! Also try Kinky Boots. The music is fun and also very powerful. Dear Evan Hansen is perfection all around. The characters, the music and the message come together to make it an awesome show. If you want something completely off the beaten track, try The Toxic Avenger. It's a quirky show with a small cast. People seem to really love it or really hate it. My son is a huge fan and I've watched it with him several times. If you can roll with the weirdness, it has some great music and performances.

Hadestown (my current favorite Broadway show)

in 1979 i was fortunate enough to see andre de shields in 'ain't misbehavin'-SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE!

o/p-it's not by any means modern music (it's music from the harlem renaissance of the 1920's and 30's) but the original broadway cast recording is a great listen (and if you are a disney fan you can get some great listening in of 'oogie boogie' ken page).

AP allows you to park at the theme parks for free whether you are staying on site or not. DVC only allows you to park for free at the theme parks if you are staying at a Disney resort, just like all the other guests staying at a Disney resort.

Can’t believe I forgot Come From Away. I didn’t know what to expect of that show and came away from it with new hope for humanity. What an awesome show!

These are already mentioned, but
Avenue Q
Come From Away

Also awesome, but flulffier:
Legally Blond
Mama Mia (the musical, not the movie)

I personally feel like Rent is really dated now (and also... grow up and learn to pay your rent.... clearly I'm old.)

Lin Manuel has done 3 major musicals:
Hamilton
In the Heights
Bring it On
He had some earlier stuff that was workshopped and never brought to the big stage too, certain songs pop up on my Spotify list :)

Which I would suggest if you have Spotify, there is a Broadway Bops playlist that plays some great new musicals. Pandora also has a Broadway Showtunes Radio that plays mostly modern musicals. Great place to get new ideas for what to listen to!

I LOVE Wicked, one of my favorites but I think it's very much a traditional musical. That said, the music is wonderful.
I also agree with Waitress, Mamma Mia, Dear Evan Hanson. Something rotten isn't really modern music, but it's great. I would also add If/Then. And if you are not easily offended, Book of Mormon :-)

Come From Away is my current favorite modern musical.
Aida
Something Rotten
She Loves Me (super old school musical but very cute. )
American Idiot ( I hate Green Day, but love this show)
Next To Normal ( This show does not get nearly enough love. )
Jagged Little Pill ( As a die hard Alanis fan I was not on board with this show. I finally listened to the soundtrack and now I am obsessed. )
Original Soundtrack for West Side Story (musical perfection)
Falsettos (Finally listened to this show and bring your tissues)

My dd has a Next to Normal tattoo :-) I can't listen to most of the music from this, because it just makes me cry. Except I'm Alive, that is one of my favorite songs!
I made the mistake of trying to watch recording of it when I was pregnant with my youngest. I didn't make it through the 2nd act. I was crying too much!!!!
