The ceremony today was all the more moving because of the beautiful music incorporated into it.

Does anyone know which branch of the military had it's chorus sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic? It was an awesome performance.

Ronan Tynan was magnificent, especially the Ave Maria. And what an honor for those youngsters to sing at a state funeral. I'm assuming that they are part of the choir of the National Cathedral. I was watching the coverage on MSNBC for a while (flipping to CNN) and Chris Matthews said that his son had formerly been a member of the choir there for eight years.

My main question is: Does anyone know the name of the piece that was played as the recessional as the presiders left the church and as President Reagan's casket was carried up the aisle? It was a VERY powerful and moving piece of music.

A truly beautiful service.

I wondered the same thing. It was very beautiful.

It is so funny you post this, I have been doing a search looking for the name of that very piece...it was magnificent. I will post here when I find the name.

Boo's Mom - thanks for the great link!

I thought the music was some of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard.

I specifically checked for the names of some of them on FOX and I thought the name of the one where they were carrying him out of the Cathedral was called "Going Home" which is what they were going to do w/ him.

I might be thinking of the piece they played at the airport, but I thought it was more quiet there w/ little music. So I am going to say it was "Going Home" at the Cathedral because I specifically looked for a name thinking how lovely a song it was.

I took the lazy way out...I just asked my friends on the DIS, I knew someone would have the answer ;)

Thank you, Boo's Mom. That was wonderful to have all the music listed.

And Dan, thanks for the audio.

They called the piece "Going Home", but I believe it is actually an excerpt from Antonin Dvorak's "New World Symphony" (2nd or 3rd Movement I think, but don't quote me on it)

Thanks again for that, Dan.

I cannot remember having been so moved by a piece of music in a long time.
