I've never waitlisted thus far but I read that DVC'ers have reserved certain dates, thus putting a demand on there points. Then, subsequently, they waitlist for the same period to get a better or preferred other resort. How does this work? Only the actual reservation uses points and the waitlists do not? Lets say I have 100 points left and my reservation uses 97, can I then still request a waitlist for the same period of time at a different resort, with only 3 points remaining?

For the example you used, MS would cancel the reservation you have if the waitlist comes through. Then the "new" reservation would reuse the points from the canceled reservation.

You should talk with MS at the time to be sure you understand how the rep is setting up the waitlist request for you. To set up a waitlist, there must be points "available" that would be valid for the waitlisted dates. The "available" points could be from a reservation that you would cancel if the waitlist comes through, though.

EXAMPLE: Let's say you own at SSR and booked your 97 point reservation there at 11 months. At 7 months you tried to switch to either VWL or BCV, but there was no availability. Assume that the desired reservation at VWL or BCV also cost 97 points. You asked MS to waitlist at both.

Later, the BCV waitlist comes through. MS cancels the SSR reservation, makes the BCV reservation with the points from the canceled SSR reservation and cancels the VWL waitlist. If you really wanted VWL instead, you'd have to call back and get on the VWL waitlist again. You'd go to the bottom of that list. So it may not be a good idea to waitlist at multiple resorts unless you really would be happy at any of them.

MS scewed up my waitlist. I had two ressies, one in my name and one in my brother's. Both had waitlists on them, mine came thru so they cancelled the one for my brother and I had to start again.

They were not quite for the same dates or room type so I was very upset. Good thing I called to check.:headache:

surfer ed, we had the same thing happen to us. My sister's waitlist came through and they canceled my room instead of hers. I called the same day since I am a compulsive checker and they could not get the same room type back for the mistake they made. I ended up using an additional 12 points to get the preferred room so that at least we would be at the same resort, which was the intention of the waitlist for my sister.

Just be careful. I have them read back what they type in for the waitlist now so that I am sure it is worded the way it should be.
