Multiple Use Year

Hello just was wondering some quick advice. What are people's thoughts on multiple use years?

Generally against having multiple UY

The only time it makes sense to me, is if you have 2 buckets of distinct points at 2 (or more) different resorts that will never intermingle. Say you have Beach Club for an October annual F&W visit, and then say Poly for a spring time MK vacation. Then it's not a hassle.

I have two use years with two home resorts. The plan is to use them alternate years and if I need more points then borrow from whatever contract I'm using. But I bought where I plan on staying so want the 11 month booking window at each resort and mixing points would only help me at 7 months. If the contracts were for the same resort or I planned a lot of trips outside of my home resort or at the 7 month mark it would be a pain.

Avoid it if possible. Personally I don't think its the end of the world just another step of calling MS to finalize our booking at 11 months. I can book the room for the first 3-4 days with my primary contract, then call MS to add on to the reservation by transferring my points over.

Trickier to track points though as well since you can't see Transferred points online.

I have 3 UYs but all have enough points to function on their own and I never book nights together. That means I sometimes I have borrowed points on one, even though I have current UY points on another.

so, unless you have a reason, stick with one. If you want to use points together, you have to transfer and then always call MS to book or change. There will be times when that extra hour could make a difference in getting a room

If it is for two resorts you plan to use entirely separately, sure.

If you want to combine points at the same resort at 11 months, or two resorts at 7, it is a terrible idea.

depends on whether you're a haphazard point accumulator or someone who has a specific plan per year for your points. If you're the former you can jam points from all contracts together at 7 months to try new resorts, book a larger accommodation, etc.

We have a relatively specific intended use for each of our contracts and use them mainly at our home resorts (i.e. within our home resort advantage window). So in our case I actually like keeping them all clean and separate (purely a mental benefit).

Having two UY can be beneficial, because you'd have two wait lists for each UY and two different banking deadline so you might use them for stays at different times of the year.
However this is a minor advantage, do it only if you do not plan to use the points together at 7 months, it would be more difficult to manage your reservations.

There are benefits and drawbacks to having multiple use years. If it's different resorts, I think it's a benefit. If it is the same resort, I would recommend to keep it in the same use year.

Ended up putting in an offer for a 25 point with a different use year. I got it accepted at a pretty good price so I'm hoping I can handle the different use year if not I will just sell in a few years :)

Do you plan to use the contract separately? I have one 25 point contract at BWV which I use exclusively for a Food & Wine weekend every year. If you do that, it makes sense. If you plan to use the points in addition to your other points, then I think you’re making a mistake. The small contract worries me.

I'm kind of doing this for 2 reasons. Reason #1 is that I want a few extra points if I ever need them in case I do a trip to Aulani. I would want to stay in a 2 bedroom and would need the extra points for a whole weeks stay. The other reason for them would be for extra points in case other family would want to come on a trip and those points would be used separately to book a room (via banking/using/borrowing from that 25 point pool)

What he is saying is that it is harder to combine points if they are not the same use year I think.

Just be aware that to combine them for that 2 bedroom, you will have to transfer them from that membership to the other. Once you do that, you do that, you will have to call to use them as they can’t be used online, So both booking and modifying require a call.

The other thing is that once transferred, they retain their own UY, so you’ll have to be sure to coordinate that correctly.

Two UYs is two membership. It’s like you are two different people and thus why it’s not as easy as the same.
