My DH and I are pretty much headed for buying at SSR next month. However, there are 5 of us, so we have to buy enough points for a decent stay in a one bedroom villa...My thought is that right now we are able to go the first/second week in October so it is usually value or regular season. We are thinking of starting with 160 points...

I have seen that there is talk of them building villas at the contemporary which would be really really cool...So, if I am correct, we can have our points at ssr and then turn around and buy, say, 75 points at a new resort so we can have a "home" there too?

What is the benefit of having multiple homes, as opposed to having them all at one place? My husband isn't convinced that we should wait and get more points at a later date somewhere else...that we should just get a bunch now. I thought we start at ssr, maybe try a few nights at the boardwalk or WLV, and then think about buying more points at an older DVC or one of the proposed new plans. Any thoughts appreciated.

That is a personal choice type of purchase. YOu will find plenty of folks on here who reccomend buying at EVERY resort you want a home resort privilege at. Bear in mind that 160 points isn't a lot of points. If you are thinking into the future, those 3 kids will grow quickly and you will VERY soon want a second bathroom. Also be aware that the stated occupancy of a 1 bedroom is 4, so if DVC ever decides to enforce the occpancy limits like they are the transfering limits, you might be required to have a 2 bedroom. For that reason, I would look at your preferred time to travel and buy enough points for a 1 week stay in a 2 bedroom unit during that season.

If you decide to split your points up between two resorts, remember that the points you have at each resort are the only ones with the 11 month booking privilege at THAT resort. That means you would only have the 75 points available any given year at that resort, or 150 every two years etc. That is the reason we decided to buy both our contracts at OKW (our original home resort). We talked about buying at a second resort when we added on, but the deciding factor for us was that we wanted to have enough home resort points for a GV occationally, so that meant we wanted all 380 available at the 11 month window.

We have points at three resorts. Two of our resorts are 100 point contracts. So with careful borrowing and banking, we can stretch those 100 points out to 300 points every three years. Or at least 200 points every two years. For the 11 month advantage. We got Thanksgiving at VWL with our 200 points but we needed to change three days after 7 months to get the same one bedroom for the entire 7 days.

We have 3 contracts, and 2 add-on's.At one time I owned a contract at BCV, but it was just too complicated. We never could stay at 3 resorts in a year, so we sold one, and are content with two different resorts at WDW. We also have a Marriott, so we have access to the special deals thru II, and that gives us all the options we need.

We were also thinking of buying at whatever new resort opens and already have 210 points at BCV. So if I understand you correctly, if we buy another 100 points say at DVC Contemporary, those BCV points are no good at any resort other than BCV?

You can use points from other resorts at the 7 month time frame to make reservations. You can only use resort specific points from 11 months to just before the 7 month period. We used OKW points to get our three days in studios converted to three days in one bedrooms for our 1 week at VWL. The 200 points we used got us 4 nights in a one bedroom (Tu-Fri nights) and 3 nights in a studio (Sat-Mon nights). We supplemented the VWL points we had for the studios with additional points from OKW right at 7 months to change them into one bedroom villas. So we wound up with 7 nights in a one bedroom villa at VWL from Sat-Fri nights (checking out on the next Sat AM).

You can use those points at any DVC resort you want, but you wont have the 11 month booking window with them at anything other than Their home resort.
