multi-resort ownership - why?

 Many people have mentioned owning at several resorts so they can book early for in-demand seasons. But it's my understanding you can only book 11 months out using the number of points you own and have available at that resort. So if you own 25 at AKV, 100 at BWV, and 50 at OKW, you can't book a 100+pt trip a year in advance at AKV just because you have points in general.

Is this right? And if so, why own at several resorts unless you own lots and lots at each, in which case, how do you use them all up? Someone mentioned owning at 5 resorts!!!

I own at the BCV and BWV. I have (and utilize) the 11-month advantage at both resorts and enough points at each to be able to reserve the time I want.

I'm retired and have no problem using all the points. ;) However, I do invite family/friends to join me at times. :thumbsup2

The 11 month window can be important a number of times of year (e.g., December). Ownership structure usually is not what you set out but often you may have someone with 150 points at one resort, and 50 at another. Yes, they can only book 11 months out at the particular resort with those 50 but (a) that can often get a few or more days in a studio or (b) you can choose to go to that particular resort every third year and each time use regular points plus 50 that are banked and 50 that are borrowed, giving you 150 for that every third year trip.

I guess my thinking is different i dont really care where im staying as long as im there with the family. Just my opinion but multiple contracts just seems it would be harder to keep track.

We like to keep it simple. Too much banking & borrowing would grow old for us. This is supposed to make the vacation easy & fun, not work & worry about getting the resort days. Whew, we want to just go & have a great time!

We like Hilton Head in the summer - so we bought points there for a week. We like Vero at Spring Break so we bought points there we usually split up a trip between Vero and WDW so enough for a few days there. . We LOVE WDW so we bought our first points at OKW. We don't stay in a room smaller than a one bedroom (HH a two bedroom) so we have 910 points all together.

:thumbsup2

I guess I'm not sure a 25 point contract would be as useful, but when we did an add on at AKV, we figured out how many points we would want for a stay every 2nd or 3rd year. We purchased just enough points so that multiplied be 3, it would give us that kind of stay every third year. We planned a Savanna view 2 bedroom in value season as our guide, and purchased a 69 point contract. Now we are using 1.5 years worth of points our first stay, because it is only in a 1 bedroom Concierge room, but our next trip will use the banked points left over from our '08 use year added to our '09 points and possiblly '10 points borrowed for a stay in '09 with our family.

Two key words - banking and borrowing.

exactly, theres a number of ways to use the home resort window. One of the most effective being banking and borrowing

Year 1--you use the current UY and borrow the next at one resort while banking the other resort

Year 2--you use the banked points and the current year at the other resort while

so basically you are using 2007 & 2008 points at resort A in year 1
and 2007 & 2008 points at resort B in year 2

then 2009 & 2010
and 2009 & 2010

etc
etc

lol, it only takes about 10 seconds online to do. Its fine if you dont want to, but you cant make it seem like its a lot of work. It can be one of the biggest advantages DVC has to offer

Playing with points and multiple resorts would never be work for me - it's FUN :yay:

I have 220 points at OKW, 80 at VB and just 30 at BWV and I think it's just right for our vacations. Every few years I quite like a BW view studio for a few days, but OKW 1 brm is my first love (size, location and parking outside of the door :) ). If we add on more it will be at OKW.

Like to book everything at 11 months, would hate to wait list and so I own at the only resorts I want to stay at. Works for me.
