Hi Everyone
First post, sorry, asking for information.
Back in '98 we bought a Mulan cel from the MGM Studios, we were lucky enough to meet the artists and have the mount signed.
A few years later we purchased the Tarzan cel and the Jiminy Cricket cel.
From what I understand these 3 were very limited, Mulan wasn't very popular, Jiminy was mistakenly deleted early, and I'm not sure about Tarzan.
How much do you think these are worth and how would I go about selling them?
Is ebay the best outlet or is there a dedicated Disney-type auction site which would drum up more interest?
We have collected these since '98, and we have quite a few in the collection, along with a Waterford Crystal Dopey which was produced for a Disneyana event at Epcot, engraved/signed by both artists/sculptors.
If anybody knows more info on the item I'd be grateful!
Thanks!
Mike

A friend of mine has all the MGM/DHS cels. He said that the Tarzan is the rarest followed by Mulan. He was not aware of the Jiminy also being considered a rare cel. He estimates that you probably would want to ask about $500-750 for the Tarzan and Mulan ones, if you were trying to sell them. Other than ebay and maybe posting them for sale on various Disney website forums that allow posting items for sale, he is not aware of a board dedicated to these MGM/DHS cels.

He did suggest that if you do sell them on ebay or whereever, to take a picture of the Certificate of Authenticity and a photo of the back of the cel to show the hand painting (if they are not framed). He said ebay does have some fake ones out there.

Good Luck!

Thanks Babette.
I have video footage of the signing so no problem with authenticity.
I didn't realize that Tarzan was the rarest, does anyone know why?
Jiminy was retired after just 6 months I believe, where as most lasted at least 2 - 6 years. Except specials like Millennium Mickey.
Nowadays the cel are LTD Editions.
We try to pick up a few when we visit as the P&P to the UK is stupid money, about the say as an unframed cel!
Does your friend have the signed cels of Mulan and Tarzan?
I have seen Mulan, singed go for $1000 - $2500 on ebay, but that was a while ago.

I had it explained to me by the artists that the family who owns the rights to Tarzan made Disney stop all Tarzan merchandise at that time, so very few were made.

They generally go for that or higher! They are not going down in value.

That's what I thought, but there must be a limit to the value of these things.
Don't want to miss the boat, I could pay off a credit card with one of these!

Thanks for the info on the Tarzan cel, we nearly passed on that one, but they found a signed frame at the MGM store so we bought it, and I'm glad we did!

There is a Tarzan cel on ebay now with a low starting bid, if anyone is looking for it. #310120167952.
Oh, and the same seller also has a Mulan cel up also. So here is a chance to gauge the current 2ndary price of them, esp in a down ecomony.

Thanks for posting that, I'll keep me eye on it!
Especially as it has no paper work!
The same seller has the Mulan as well although it only has 2 signatures on a card whereas mine the mount is signed as per Tarzan.

It appears that there is only one signature...?

Thanks again!

Well I just watched the auctions finish for these two items and again Mulan sold for the most, but with only one signature $1,025. Tarzan $640.00.
Guess I'll hang on to mine. I've either missed the boat or the prices reflect the sign of the times.
Thanks Babette for the ebay link, your friend was spot on with the Tarzan.

PS Just in case anyone from this forum bought the Mulan, I did contact the seller about the mistake in the listing, but it was never changed.

There were two signatures on the Mulan card picture. One is across the middle, the other is around "9 o'clock" on the card.

I'm curious to see if more pop up for sale on ebay given how successful all these auctions were and the above retail price for most of them.

Hi Babette
I have the Mulan in my watched folder on ebay.
There is definitely only one signature, David E Rippberger.
The writing at 9 o'clock reads; Disney Cel Artist.

Do you have either of these pictures?

Hi Aprilsky
Thanks for the clarification on the signatures. From the photo on the ebay auction, that looked like another signature but I could not make out the words.

No, I do not have any MGM/DHS cels, but I do have two friends who each have the Mulan and Tarzan cels. My one friend has collected all of them to date, so he has a very nice collection. His one wall in an extra bedroom is wallpapered in his MGM/DHS cels.

All:

Tarzan just sold a few minutes ago (5/17/09; 6:30EDT) on ebay for $430
-Looks like the economy is taking its toll on MGM studio cels

Hi my little brother somehow acquired one of these Mulan cels. He looked it up on ebay and found one that seemed to be pretty valuable and wanted to sell his. He showed it to a family friend who told us it was a Disney 'cel'. I have never heard this term before and am unsure of the value of this item or even what it is exactly. It is not hand painted but it is in very good condition. It is framed and everything. It is the Mulan "Friendship in Bloom" Disney cel. When I google it, it appears to be a rare item, and therefore valuable. Again, I have no idea about this sort of thing and am wondering if anyone could offer me assistance in explaining what it is and how much it's worth. Any information would be appreciated

Les
