My dd is starting her college searches. She wants to major/minor in dance. Maybe teach or dance movement therapy? We came across this college and was wondering if anybody here knew anything. She also is looking at SUNY Geneso. Any help would be appreciated

Muhlenberg is a fairly well regarded liberal arts college. My college roommate worked there in admissions for many years. Beyond that, I admit to not knowing too much (I am all for liberal arts schools if you can afford it).

Muhlenberg is a good school in my hometown. It was my top choice in the area, but I decided I would rather live in Philly. They have a decent dance program. I have seen some great shows. I only know one person who majored in dance (double major). She was very talented but is not dancing anymore, not sure if this is by choice or not.

Most of my high school friends went to college for dance (performing arts high school) and some are still performing a couple of years after graduation. My friends who went to school in a larger city seem to be doing better, as they had much more opportunies outside of school, regardless of the actual school.

I live 10 minutes from there. I have only heard good things about the school. Beautiful campus and plenty to do here! If I can be of any help with questions about the area, please let me know.

Thanks...we are going to sign up for Junior Open House and check things out. If I have any questions, I'll be sure to bring them here :goodvibes

It is a Lutheran School if that matters to your daughter. It is one of the schools my son looked at, but decided wasnt Lutheran enough for him. He wanted more of the religious atmosphere then the campus offered (he is a Pre-Sem/Religion major). He felt if it was a Lutheran School there should be a cross on the front page of the web site, and theres not so he rulled the school out

It's know as a top non audition school. I have know quite a few kids that have gone there over the last few years and they absolutely love it.

On Geneseo my nephew is a freshman there this year and loving it so far! And I don't have personal experience with Muhllenberg but have only heard good things

Geneseo is coming to her HS tomorrow for a meet and greet...she's going to check that out and then make an appt for this Spring to visit the campus. Muhlenberg already came and she missed it :(

I don't know anything about that, but is it better to go to an audition school? Does this make it easier to get in? I know my dd wants to challenge herself a bit. Also, do you know if they prefer SAT over the ACT?

I live in the city next door...so I know the area. It is in a nice area of Allentown. I don't know much about the school itself, except that it has a good arts/theater program. I've been to a show there, as have the kids with school- they are top notch. They advertise their theater quite heavily around here.

Muhlenberg doesn't care whether it's ACT or SAT; in fact, they're a test-optional school. You only are required to submit test scores if you're looking for merit scholarships. And Muhlenberg is quite generous with merit scholarships, even for their early decision candidates.

It began as a Lutheran school, but except for a few Lutheran-only designated scholarships, it's pretty much secular. There's a large Jewish community at Muhlenberg.

The dance program is excellent, and it's one of the few that offers a concentration in tap. If your daughter also wants to teach dance, it's a great choice. They have a community dance school on campus, and junior and senior dance majors can teach there and get paid for it!

It was one of my daughter's top choices a few years back (she dances tap & jazz); she went elsewhere, but I always wanted her to go to Muhlenberg!

Wow...that's good to know. We are protestant and she doesn't want an overly religious school. I'll have to tell her about the teaching opportunities. Have you heard if they offer Dance Movement Therapy since she is interested in that as well..Thanks for all the insight everyone:)

I am assuming you are speaking of the one in Allentown, PA? If so, good school, a little $$$$ however; as someone who hires people for a living, a degree from there says something. I go to their sister school...Cedar Crest and I am quite happy.

My dd is a HS senior, all APs, top 10% and did very well on her SAT and SATIIs (sorry, had a mom brag moment).

We visited Berg three times since her junior year. She wants to be an othodontist and, in addition to theatre, Muhlenberg has a wonderful science program. First visit was an interview, session and campus tour and it was just my dd and me. Second time, she wanted to bring my dh and had a "chat" with her admissions person. Third time she spent the day with a bio major freshman and loved it. Her other choices were Villanova, Lehigh, Lafayette, UDel and Fordham, with her safety and financial safety being Wagner College (where I work).

The second week of October, she submitted ED to Muhlenberg and she (we) hope to hear, HOPEFULLY, this month. While I am not sure how it works for theatre majors, I do know about 60% or so freshman class are chosen from the ED pool, which leaves the remaining RD pool a little more competitive.

I try to constantly read about the school and it gets glowing remarks from anyone that attends. Good luck to your dd (and mine! LOL).

Good Luck! It is better to submit to ED? If they offer that to you are you obligated to take it? I know NOTHING about this process yet...

Thank you very much. Good luck to you and your dd too.
Yes, ED is binding (Early Decision), EA (Early Action is not), although Muhlenberg only offers ED or RD (Regular Decision).
ED is binding unless you cannot meet your financial obligations to the school if chosen. If your child needs to see what school will offer the most merit, then ED should not be chosen. ED is a contract that my dd, myself and her college advisor had to sign and submit through the CB (CollegeBoard).
A child should ONLY submit ED if that is the exact school where they want to attend.

There are many factors to answering your question about is it better to submit ED. For Muhlenberg, they take approximately 60% of their freshman class ED so the pool is much more competitive for those RD. They have a very high retention rate so perhaps this is the reason why they take most from ED. ED at Muhlenberg also gets you into a better dorm but that should not be a reason to submit ED LOL. My dd had 3 visits/interviews/chats, etc., and her Admissions person came to her school twice so she was basically aware that they were very interested in her. They also did an early read on her and informed us if everything stayed the same (grades, attendance, etc.) they told her what they could offer her. For my dd, it worked out very nicely but you need to be very sure your child can attend the school without worrying about financials if you put ED (unless you plan on high student loans for undergrad, which I would not suggest but that is a personal decision).

If you are new to the process, I am guessing your dd is a junior since seniors, for the most part are done submitting, although the deadline is December 31 (I think). My dd's HS is a small private college prep school that had them work on essasys since Junior Year and have their applications ready to be submitted along with supplements by October 1 so she was ready to submit.

One piece of advice I can give you is GO NOW to all open houses during Junior year. Do NOT wait until Senior Year. It is stressful enough for them as seniors and there will be schools on top her her list that she will want/need to revisit so that takes up a weekend. Make sure when you go to visit, you schedule interviews so that your dd can start to form a relationship with admissions.

Get on the site: collegeboard.com. You can find out much information there and that will be where your dd's SATI and SATII are stored and sent from to the schools. You can also go on collegeconfidential.com. It's a little hard core for the average person learning about college, process but it is like the dis where you can ask questions, learn and there is even a parents section.

Good luck.

I went to medical school with 2 women from Muhlenberg. They were smart ladies and very devoted to their alumn.

Muhlenberg has a good reputation in the Northeast.

That's wonderful to hear. EVERYTHING I read says how close knit everyone is and my dd felt it when she was there for a full-day visit.
Thank you fo ryour input.

I attended Cedar Crest, too (a long time ago...). Beautiful campus, caring falculty. Too bad I was too immature to appreciate at the time. Partied too much at Lehigh, lol. Eventually graduated with both BA and MA from a Texas school so it worked out in the end - though not nearly as pretty of a campus.
