a neighbor asked if I could print something in word that she emailed me. no problem, but when I tried to, it wouldn't open. the document doesn't say .doc, instead it says .docx.

what does .docx mean????

DH says that .docx is MS Word version 2007 (you must have an older version). He says you can download a filter for it or find one of many online "conversion" websites that will convert any document to any other format for free.

That or ask her to save it in "rich text" format and re-email it to you. She should "save as" and use the drop down window to choose rich text instead of MSWord.

Or, she should also be able to "save as" an earlier Word format (like 2003 - the .doc extension).

If you have a Google Gmail account, you can open up the online Google Documents program. it will probably bring it up.

thank you so much! my dh's computer is a later version, so we forwarded it to his and all was well.

glad to have the mystery solved. :)

If it was created on a Mac, it will be a .docx format unless the person conciously makes it .doc. My dd does this all the time. She sends me docs in .docx format. I have to have her resend them in .doc format.

Yes, to this. I have 2007, but most that I send docs to don't. So I just save it in an earlier format of word and they have no problems.
