Moving to Ohio

I'm going to have to change my disboard name. We are getting ready to move from Georgia to Columbus, Ohio. Somebody please tell me that I am going to be okay! Tell me something good about being 9 hours further from Disney!! What do I need to know budget wise?

I have been to C-bus several times, but mostly to the Zoo and museums. Ohio is a great place to live. Smoke-free for awhile now which is awesome! Unless you're a smoker, that is. Then you might want to buy a superduperwarm coat!

I grew up in the Columbus area. I lived there for 18 years then ran away...

In defense of the city, I wasn't trying to get away from it as much as family and the like in the area. It's a city like many others, it has it's good areas and bad, so do a lot of research before you decide where to buy or rent. The schools can vary greatly as well.

The zoo is just awesome these days. I grew up with it when it was a good zoo, now it's a great zoo. Sadly I haven't been back to Wyandot Lake (is it still called that? The water park next to the zoo) but it looks great from the outside. So you may want to budget to either of those. COSI used to be much funner, but is still enjoyable if you have younger kids.

You'll enjoy the fall harvest time as far as food costs go. Be sure to enjoy going to the various apple orchards to go picking, usually they're pretty inexpensive. Other than that, be prepared for the food to be a little more expensive in the winter time than it is in GA I'm sure. And the fruit to be less tasty.

We did the opposite of you... headed to NC Oh and the other posters were right, you'll need new warm clothes. I'd start hitting up yard sales and thrift stores for some nice thick coats now

Welcome to Ohio! There are a lot of Disney fans here! I'm near Cleveland. And fwiw, Southwest had 4 non-stops/day from Columbus to MCO. You can be at Disney in 2 hours.

We are actually looking forward to the move but I will miss the warm winters and being close to Disney. I probably won't miss the hot , hot summers! Definitely going to look around for coats. Thanks for your replies!

I loved living in Ohio. DH and I moved there unexpectedly due to a work promotion (what do you mean -I'm getting transferred to Cleveland?)

It was the best thing! The people were wonderful, home prices were cheaper than in the Northeast, and it was just beautiful.

I thought it was going to be awful, but I had the best time back in Ohio. We would still be living there if the company did not close. There is just so much to do and it is lovely.

Forget the snow shovel.. buy a snow blower (two stage if you can). Get a very warm coat and gloves.. and learn to drive in the snow.. nobody is a weather wussy there so things don't close at the thought of snow....

I'm 2 hours north of Columbus but we visit there frequently. As a previous poster mentioned, do some research before deciding which area is best for you. And as another poster mentioned, Columbus is much like other large cities - good and bad.

Obviously, the campus area is just that - home to (at least it once was) the largest university in the U.S. That area can be CRAZY! But in the suburbs, there is some fantastic shopping, marvelous schools and amazing arts and entertainment. I think you'll find a lot to love!

I live in the Columbus area and love it! It is a great city! We moved here from S. Carolina and don't regret it at all. It is a great family friendly city with tons of parks and activities for families. Lots of great restaurants and the shopping is excellent. We have two really upscale malls and a few "regular" ones. I hope you love it here as much as we do.

We visited Columbus last summer and loved it! We stayed in the Easton area and met many people who were from there that loved it. It seemed like a very family friendly area.

Welcome to Columbus! I live in a suburb of Columbus and enjoy living here. I would love to be able to escape to Florida in Feb and March, most of the time it is great. Definately investigate areas before you purchase a home. There is good and bad, like any town. Cost of living isnt bad and for the post part people are friendly and helpful. If you have specific questions feel free to ask. I bet there is someone here that can answer them. I will be happy to do my best.
But the drive to Disney can be a bear. We usually fly Southwest, but next trip we are going to have to drive. That part is a downer! But it isnt a bad drive out east or west towards St. Louis, so it does have some upsides.

Columbus is still considered "the south" to those of us who live in NE Ohio! I'm not that familiar with Cbus, but if you ever want to visit Amish Country or the Canton-Akron area, I can hook you up! Good luck with the move!

Yeah Columbus doesn't get anywhere near the amount of snow as NE Ohio! Columbus is a really nice city!

Welcome to OHIO!!! I live in the Cleveland area, but my aunt and uncle are in C-bus. My cousins grew up in Reynoldsburg, then when they finished HS, my Aunt and uncle moved downtown (close to work for my aunt). DH has cousins in Hilliard (clear across town from Reynoldsburg). We have spent a ton of time in the area!

Be sure to go to the zoo!! We are also big fans of the Franklin Park Conservatory, COSI, the Statehouse and the Ohio Historical Society. There is plenty of shopping if that's your thing (Easton!!!!) and my kids like to wander OSU campus and pretend they are grown-up. The OSU marching band does a free concert every Saturday before home football games. It's basically their warm-up/rehearsal, but it's a great show. We have been known to drive down just to see the band!

You will ultimately love living in Ohio, just heed previous advice and get a snow blower and parka. You're gonna need 'em!

I am in Gahanna and I am 20 minutes from downtown, three minutes from Easton and about 15 from Polaris.

Welcome to Columbus! I moved here from the NYC area 25 years ago, and boy, has it changed since then - it's a WONDERFUL place to live and work. Great school systems in the surrounding areas, lots of activities for the whole family, reasonably priced housing stock and taxes - frankly, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I suggest you go onto various Columbus websites, like ColumbusDispatch dot com and Columbusunderground dot com, to get a feel for things here in town - and welcome to the midwest!

We live in the Cincinnati area, however, my brother and his family reside in Columbus. We visit about once/month. Great city. I like it and they do, as well. Cost of living is reasonable and fun things to do. My kids love to go to COSI with their cousins. The zoo, as well. Depending on where you live in Columbus you can get to Kings Island amusement park which is northern part of Cincinnati in a little over an hour. While not Disney, still fun and we always get season passes and the cousins come down from Columbus a few times. Brother's family is happy with the public school district (Olentagey).

You'll like it. We have some nice parks (I LOVE HIGHBANKS METRO PARK), the #1 zoo in the country (thanks to Jack Hannah), an International Airport (CMH) that SOUTHWEST/AIRTRAN flys , some really nice suburbs, pretty good arts life, and the BEST thing of all time- Jeni's Ice Cream.
