Hi,
My DH is getting stationed at Ft. Sill and we'll be moving down there around mid April. Has anyone lived there? Any advice on anything??? I've never been there and really don't know what to expect at all. Can someone tell me the "nicer" areas to live and the really "not so nice" areas? Any reccomendations on elementary schools or school districts (do they have more than one in Lawton?) We're in a much larger city right now, so I'm trying to just find somewhere to start. Also, can anyone tell me what the weather is like- are there 4 seasons? We'd like to rent a house, however I haven't seen a lot of nice places to rent. Where we live now there's a ton of places to rent, but I don't see that many downt there. And for one of my biggest questions what are the bugs/snakes/rodents like? We really don't have any problem where we live now, but I've heard OK has more "nature" :rotfl: (I'm not a huge fan.) Could anyone tell me if I need to worry about my kids playing in the backyard due to these creatures? TIA for any info.

I've never lived there but haven't heard that great about it either. It gets hot in the summer and it's dusty in OK. There are snakes and bugs and other nasty things but it could be worse(think Ft Polk in LA lol)

Have you looked at ahrn.com or militarybyowner.com for housing?

I know that there is at least one person on here that is at Sill and is a teacher there. I imagine she is at work right now. You may want to put this on the military subboard at the top for input from others. This is liable to fall to other pages quickly.

I did a search for Ft. Sill and came up with this thread. Someone was being transferred and asked about the area. You may be able to PM or e-mail some of the responders to that thread for info.

I was stationed there apr 65 - jan 67 so I can't help much other than I remember the weather not being that bad. I thought mostly pleasant. Hot in the summer but a dry heat.

ALSO MANY THANKS TO YOUR HUSBAND FOR HIS SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. IT IS MOST APPRECIATED!!!!

THE SAME TO OTHER SERVICE MEN/WOMEN WHO POST HERE. WITHOUT THEM THERE WOULD NOT BE A "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

Lived there and it is not so bad!!! Lawton is a good city and has some really nice areas and some not so nice areas!!! The schools are great!! We just moved and my first grader tested on a 4th grade reading level at her new school all thanks to Lawton Public schools. There is no TARGET so that stinks. We never had a bug problem and you do get all four seasons. The summer is hot but low humidity so it is not so bad. They have a fun water park and last year season passed were only 30 dollars per person. So we spent our summer there. Elgin is really close by and is a really nice area with great schools. OKC and Norman are not close enough to live but to shop. We had a nice time there and will probably go back after this deployment. I really think it is all what you make it. I do not know if you have kids but I can also give you info on peds, dentist, dance schools, and cheer gyms. So any questions you have I will help to answer them. If you tell me the area the homes are in I can probably give you information that also.

Thanks for all the replies and the links! I've looked on AHRN, but haven't really found a whole lot of nicer homes, but hopefully when we get down there and can determine the nicer areas from the not so nice we'll have a better idea. Thanks again!

My uncle and aunt lived there about 20-18 yrs ago. My uncle is in the US army and was stationed at Ft. Sill for about 5 or 6 yrs I think. I don't talk to my aunt and uncle that often,so I can't give their opinion of Lawton. I did visit there for 1 week in my early 20's, my grandma was living with them at the time and my mom made arrangements for me to go and visit for a week.
I went end of Sept of 1991 and as I remember, it was quite chilly there, in the '50s as highs that week. The elementary schools I think were ok at the time there. My cousin was 9 yrs old at the time and she did ok at the elementary school. I don't think they lived right on base- about a couple of miles away. You can hear the guns go off, alot of noise from the base where they were at. I think they lived in a small townhome but I can't remember what subdivision. I did remember aunt was complaining of 1 mouse that kept trying to get in the house, but they must have had a mouse trap of some sort b/c I never saw the thing.

Best wishes to you on moving there!
