My boyfriend just got a job in Monroe, and we are going to be moving down to GA. Do you have any recommendations for places to live (areas, apartments), cable/internet providers, places to go for fun, things to do? Good banks? Places to shop?

Basically any tips?

I had to do a search just to find out where it is! :confused3

I found out it's about an hour EAST of Atlanta. I couldn't tell you (obviously) anything about living there but you can sure come to Atlanta on the weekends for fun!:thumbsup2

I used to work in Monroe.

You didn't really give any info about your situation, though. I would give different recommendations to someone with kids looking for a quiet family place than I would someone young and looking for fun, you know?

No kids, but we have a dog. We would really love a community environment with a yard. We would be moving from PA/NJ to GA so we think a community would be a great way to get to know people. So any townhome/condo/apt communities with yards would be ideal.

There's not a whole lot to Monroe. It would be a nice place to raise a family, but there's not a lot to DO there, not much of a city to speak of.

Athens is about 20 minutes away. Cheap housing and funky college town vibe. Tons of culture and restaurants and entertainment. (That is where I lived when I worked in Monroe). Probably my favorite city in the whole state! You can find lots of townhomes and apartments there, not as many swim/tennis McMansion communities.

If you want to be closer to Atlanta, you could look into Loganville (right next to Monroe, in Gwinnett County with lots of shopping) or Conyers (a little more country but growing.) You'll find more of the HOA style communities there because they are suburbs of Atlanta. Lots of families.

You could find some good stuff in Barrow County just outside of Athens too.

Great part of the state to live in, honestly! Close to the mountains with the beach not TOO far away (4-5 hours).

If it were ME, I'd choose Athens. The only reason I moved was because I left my Monroe job and jobs in Athens are difficult to get (tons of people go to college there and don't want to leave.)

I'll be happy to answer any more questions you might have!

We've been told Athens is a great place to be. Do you have any recommendations for realtors or properties? I'd love a yard for the dog, as he is used to it already.

It looks like jobs might be hard to find in Athens. Also looking between Atlanta and Monroe, like Lawrenceville, Snellville, Grayson. Are those good?

I live in morgan co. Just one county over. More rural. Love it here. GREAT school system etc. Pm me for more info.

I lived in Athens when I was in Law School and for a while thereafter. Live about 25 minutes away now. I can ask some of my friends for realtor names if you end up really wanting to look there. Athens is a great town! Great for a young couple w/ no kids, but I also know lots of families there as well.

We are heading down Sept 2-4 to take a look at Snellville and surrounding areas and apartments. Are there any places we should stay away from?
