Moving to another state - need advice

I've lived in several states.
Our biggest and furthest move was from Boston to Florida.
I got my best info from people on the DIS and other message boards. We only had two chouces of cities to live within Florida because of the job. But, I feel we made a great choice and most reccomendations were right on the money. Happily ever after almost 8 years later.

thanks for the info everyone

Anne, I wouldn't move until my husband had a job but before he starts looking we need to decide on a couple of areas to concentrate the search in. I work from home so can work anywhere

I understand about traffic. We have tons of it where I live now and it can take 30 minutes to just get across town. I don't know what you consider high taxes. We currently pay $6200 in property taxes and that is considered normal where we live

Generally speaking what type of field is your DH in? We might be able to toss some ideas and areas your way.

My property taxes are $11,000 a year.

It can take an hour to get from one side of Orlando to the other during rush hour, Miami and Tampa are even worse. I moved here from NJ, and frankly the traffic is a lot worse here than it was there. The road builders haven't been able to keep up with the massive population growth in the state.

Have you considered North Carolina for your move? There was an article in one of the local papers that showed a large percentage of the people moving to NC are from NY

I grew up in Pittsburgh, went to Grad School in Morgantown WV and Albany NY. Lived in the Boston Area for 9 years and moved to Chapel Hill NC three years ago. This is by far the best place we have lived.

No real advice on the moving process, but about the kids - in light of your older child's age, you probably want to get that move accomplished as soon as possible. It's much harder to move a teenager than it is a younger child. Usually by the time they enter high school, they really don't want to leave their friends. However, there are always exceptions, but it's still worth thinking about.

My husband is in the food service industry as a managing director but has recently decided to go back into the healthcare or senior living field of food service. He is a chef and has done everything from working at restaurants (early in the career) to working for a major caterer in our area for many years the moved up into the "Director of food service" job description, so basically he runs the food areas of the place he currently works for, which is a high end apartment building in Manhattan which provides the people living there with 3 meals a day. Basically the rent there starts at $4000 a month and up for a one bedroom apartment, higher if you have a water view or two, three bedrooms, etc. He manages a multi million dollar yearly budget for his department

I don't think I want to live in central florida (orlando area) because I have heard the schools aren't great. We are looking at maybe north of Orlando in Seminole county or even more north then that

We have also considered NC but haven't yet looked into anything there
This is in the very very very early talking stages but I wanted to get an idea of where I should do the research when we do decide to go.

My DD is in 7th grade right now and we do want to make the move before she starts high school, which gives us about 1 1/2 years

The taxes in Seminole County are VERY high to support those schools. Keep in mind that unless he wants to continue in an executive type position, he's probably going to make a lot less down here than for a similar position up north, with cost of living averaging out to be similar. yes, some things are less $$, but others are much more money. Also you don't want to live in Seminole County if he won't be working in Seminole, Volusia, or very northern Orange, as the commute will be hellish. It's taken me over 90 minutes to get from my job in the west side of Orange County to my friends house in the south end of Seminole County during rush hour, and that was just traffic, no wrecks or weather.

BTW--Seminole is still considered Central Florida. And do'nt completely discount Orange County schools, there are some areas where they are quite good.

Fortunately he's got a very transportable skill, so he should have no problems finding a job, finding one that pays reasonably well might be a different story.

Good luck!

Anne

Thanks Anne for the very useful information

Do you have recommendations of schools in Orange County
Or do you have recommendations on other areas you think are nice in Florida?

Thanks again
