What are you thinking? There is so much to do here, any thoughts you may have just ask, I will check the board here to see what you are seeking

I am sending this over to our Community Board since it is not directly DVC discussion. Thank you.

where is some good places to live?

About 4 years ago Our nephew & his wife bought a very nice new 3 bedroom home in a new development about 30 minutes slightly to northwest of WDW in Groveland ( near Clermont ). From what they've told us this is an area with lots of new community development, supposedly a "hot" place to live especially for families. Don't know what the situation is now with everything slowed down due to economy.

I can tell you for the past year or more they've said many people in the Orlando area have lost their jobs and overall, employment had become alot harder to come by.

:)

thanks SOOOOOOOOOOO much, i will look at the houses there:)

Well Hi Neighbor.
We live in Asheville to.
We hope to move to Florida in a few years.

In order to really help you, we need a little more information.

Are you planning on buying a home? Renting a house? Renting an apartment?

Where will you be working?

Do you need to be near a school? If so, what level?

What types of things do you want to be near? Shopping? WDW? Theater/arts?

All of these things make a huge difference in what areas might be the right fit for you.

We are moving there also in a couple of months. Seems like a few people on the board are moving to Orlando.

Well, there is quite a distance between the downtown area and the theme parks. May I ask why you want to be near the downtown area? Is it for work purposes? The downtown area, IMHO, isn't a great area to live unless you work in that area.

Not to be the buster of the bubble, but I have been reading a lot of "Moving to Orlando" threads lately, and I wanna just make some comments on my experience's here over the last 9yrs.

- Orlando and Tampa are VERY major cities, with LOTS of major companies located within them. The one major highway that runs through the city, I-4, can be a nightmare to drive on during rush hours, weekends, and whenever it rains. I am not being overly dramatic about this.

- The job market in this area is VERY VERY slim. Our unemployment rate is somewhere around 6%, and when jobs do open, there is a LOT of competion.

- A lot of people have the belief they will work for Disney, and it will be sunshine and rainbows. Sadly, this is not the case either. While Disney is the major employer in the area, the pay, is about $7 an hour, if that. The hours, not always the best, and getting time off, difficult at best. Universal and Sea World are no better. Please find a solid job before coming here.

- The housing may be everywhere, but many neighborhoods are plagued with forclosures. Also while we do not have a state tax, some places pay more in taxes than others. Keep this in mind.

- Learn the areas where to live. Like I said, try not to decide on an area to live, just because its close to Disney. Find a job first, then find the happy medium. I live in Poinciana, which is just outside of Kissimmee. I can get to WDW in about 30, with very little to no time on I-4. Once you find an area...RESEARCH everything you can.

Now here is what I like about living here..

- Shorts are normal about 10 months or more.
- Theme Parks are close when I need them, but burnout settles in VERY quick. I cannot handle crowds.
-2 Major airports within driving distance, meaning 2 different locations for flights out.
-2 Major cities close by
-A larger variety of stores, with more coming all the time.
-Watching shuttle launches from my front yard, and being outside when they land, getting the double sonic booms!

And a few more negatives...

- THE BUGS!!! OH MY! Scorpians, Spiders, Lovebugs, and lots of other creepy crawlys!
- The humidity. Some days, it gets like the surface of the sun.
-Bugs!
-Traffic..winter is worse, due to the snowbirds.
-Did I mention bugs?

Again, I dont want to rain on anyone's moving to Orlando parade, I just wanted people to be aware that its more than just the home of Mickey.

While I am not bothered by some of the things that Dax mentioned, I agree with a lot of the points. Traffic can be bad. That is why I asked the OP about jobs. You really don't want to spend a lot of time sitting on I-4.

Housing is plentiful and a buyers market right now, but there are a ton of foreclosures. In my neighborhood alone, there are 57 homes under foreclosure and I live in a nice area.

Jobs are scare right now. I recently started working for Disney. I was really lucky to get the job. When I went to casting to put in my application, I was told that they have a waiting list of over 1000 applicants and they don't intend to start hiring again for at least six months. I only got the job because it is pretty specialized (I work for the Disney Florist). The pay is minimum wage for most positions. There have been a few job fairs recently. Literally hundreds of people stood in line for hours trying to get any type of job. So, if you don't already have a job lined up, now may not be a good time to move to Florida.

That being said, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. But, don't come with pixie dust blinders in place. Day to day living in Florida is NOT like vacationing at WDW.

Although I live on the coast, about 60 miles or so east of WDW, let me add one more thing to Dax's list: SNAKES!!

I've lived here for just over 8 years. In those 8 years, I've seen more snakes, generally harmless ones, than I had seen total in my life before moving here.

Just an observation.................
