Looking for information in this area-
Never been to this area and would
like to consider to buy a house.

I grew up right outside of the base what exactly do you want to know? I do know you cannot find a house for under 300,000 in any of the cities. Vacaville is nicer than Fairfield (which is where I grew up and am sad to say it has really gone down hill).

Fairfield is HOT HOT HOT.

I was previously in the military so occasionally, I go to Travis AFB. They have a bowling alley, roller skating rink, an enlisted club as well as an officers club, they have on base apartments as well as houses, a few stores, taco bell, baskin robins. The base isn't very large, but I think it's okay, and of course gas is cheaper.

But it is so darn hot, and it's not close to any "cool" cities in my opinion.

BUT DIXON IS THE BEST!!! :thumbsup2 :cheer2: . i've lived in the area all my life (almost 45 years) and currently live in dixon with alot of military families near by (although we are still "mayberry" by vacaville and fairfield standards :teeth: ).

if you want to p.m. i just happend to meet a travis military family (through 'freecycle") who volunteer with a miliatry relocation group on base (i think it's called "the airman's attic"-they get housing supplies for relocatees to use until their personal items arrive) i would be happy to forward your email address on to them for guidance and info. on tafb life and military life in the surrounding communities.

the areas around travis vary greatly in price and atmosphere. it could be a horrible price sticker shock depending on where you are coming from. but if have the opportunity and the desire to stay in california-there are some areas near tafb that are grossly lower priced than the california norm.

don't hesitate to p.m. me-i would be happy to research and forward any information you might desire.

I live in Vacaville. Vacaville beats Fairfield (and Dixon) :teeth: hands down. Don't consider Fairfield, Suisun, Vallejo (ugh). Dixon is nice (sister in law lives there). Good schools, better Private school (Vacaville Christian). Housing market is starting to pick up again. $400,000 will get you a decent 3/2 home, 1200 -1500sqft. $550,000 - $650,000 will get you a nice 4/2.5 to 4/3. North side of town best, 95688. Brownsvalley is where most of the new homes are, but everyone wants to move to the older N. side (North Alamo Drive).

Feel free to PM me if you like. I know the best Realtors and lenders. Good Luck :thumbsup2

we can get into a great dixon vs. vacaville debate as well as vca vs. the lesser known (but better in my opinion) christain school in vacaville my kids transferred from vca to-via p.m. :teeth: but you're right in that vacaville, the 95688 portion (with a few street exceptions) is preferable over fairfield, vallejo and suisun.

p.s.-did you see the vca family on wife swap a couple of weeks ago?

I sure am glad I'm not moving here! ;)

Good luck to the OP!

They have apartments and houses on base.

ahhh...Vacaville has a HUGE selection of outlet stores! So shopping will be reasonable!

thats if you can curtail your grocery habits to harry and davids and jelly bellies! :rotfl:

Thank you all for replying- We are moving in Aug and
I was hoping to buy a house - but all the realtors I
talked to you had some unbelievable prices-

I kept telling myself people buy houses I just need to find the right place.

My daughter and son want a mall to shop
so I am starting feel better about travis. thank you

Well, if you're looking for something fun, my mom owns a comedy club in Fairfield (although she lives down in Walnut Creek). Let me know, and I'll see who's there!

Another area she's been looking into is Cordellia or Grass (green?) valley. I don't know those areas that well, but it's two more places to look in to.

there's a mall in fairfield (westfield) as well as the outlets in vacaville.

the shopping on base is'nt bad either-they have a pretty good selection.

green valley is EXPENSIVE, but cordelia is'nt as high as some areas (but be prepared to live in a wind tunnel-when we would drive through there my kids would ask "mom, how come all the trees are growing sideways :) ?"). if your dh does'nt mind a short commute (by california standards) some military families also live in winters and woodland (which can have lower home prices).
