My DW and I have a running dialog going about how to move through the lines at WDW. :hyper2:

While in WDW last week my wife would want to go ahead of people who did not move forward quick enough. This would be at times like first going into POTC or ToT where the line is sort of wide (maybe 4 people wide) and not at the final switchbacks that are more like 2 people wide. She agrees that it is not right to cut in front of people when in the narrow line-ups but she explains that in the wide lanes the group is moving like a herd and it is ok to pass people the same way we would pass slower people when walking outside from ride to ride. I tried to explain that we should remain behind the people that entered the line before us (which we did). My wife sometimes does not pick up on the American cultural norms and truly was not trying to be pushy or rude. :confused3

Personally, my mind is made up, stay behind the people in front of you and nobody gets hurt... but I still want to hear other people give input about it. Have people cut in front of you (were you ok with it?) or do you slide ahead of people yourself and see no problem with it? Also feel free to add your unwritten standing-in-line rules.

haha we make something called the Family chain.
When the line is wide we stand beside eachother 4 wide. Nobody ever gets in front of us. Sometimes thats an attraction in its self. :)

if the line gets too far away, I try to make eye contact and give a nod to move the line forward...or even tap on a shoulder and suggest to move up. Once you are in line, I think it would be rude to pass someone up. Now if they are poking along on the way to an attraction, then passing is okay.

I usually just stand uncomfortably close to the pokers. They then move forward to escape my invasion of their personal space.

I'm a "blocker" too.

I position myself so people can't pass ahead of us, if we're waiting in a line 2 people wide, but 4 could fit.

To me, the line starts when you enter the ropes, regardless of how wide it is. Unless I was creeping along in a walker and REALLY holding things up, I'd be very offended if someone passed me (really, I'd throw a fit). I think the only time it's okay to pass is if a group is actually standing still (maybe discussing if they REALLY want to do this ride) and not moving even thought there is tons of space ahead of them. I'd still ask first though, if nothing else it will either get them to move ahead or to make up their minds not to do the ride and get out of the way.

It sounds like your wife is foreign born, and I'm sure she means no harm. Other countries have differant standards for these kinds of things, I guess. I'd just try to explain where Americans consider the start of a line and that we get very upset at cutters and line jumpers.

I say the wide lineups are fair game so I would have to agree with your wife. If they want to stand in the hallway at ToT and leave room for others to walk past then by all means go past them. Honestly if I was not paying attention or poking along, then by all means, pass me. I deserve it. It really is consideration for others that you keep the line moving so if you do not wish to be passed, then pay attention. Really, what else are you doing that prevents you from keeping up?

If someone is walking slowing around the Tree of Life are you going to poke along behind then or just say excuse me and pass them. Best of both worlds. You get to the ride faster and they are able to see everything at their own pace and don't have to feel rushed.

Guess I'd have to say that I'm a blocker and a space invader too - Blocker if there are lots of pushy people behind us and an Invader if a pokey group is in front of us.

HOWEVER...sometimes I do think it is okay to walk past people. There are some pretty clueless people out there who just don't get it. They drive me NUTS :crazy2: !

If I were to walk past a group and hear them complain about it I would apologize and give them their space back. But would probably politely say something to them about keeping up with the people in front of them.

:)

If you're standing in a long line of people just waiting to get into the ride, it really bugs me when people pass ahead. Just because I haven't taken my 2 steps as the line moved yet, doesn't mean someone should jump into that spot. If you're in a long line, you're not going anywhere fast and I think it's pretty rude to go in front of someone who's just chatting and waiting also, probably not realizing the line has moved. I think it also makes the "rude" person look kind of dumb when you get up to the actual ride and they are a whole car or two ahead of you. After all, this is vacation, not the interstate!!!

On the other hand, if the lines are moving and short, and it's obvious someone is just standing there, I would definitely ask if they are "in line" or something before I go ahead of them, but I wouldn't just stand there waiting behind. I would definitely ask though.

Probably depends on what state your from!!! :teeth:

I have an issue with the way the RnRC is set up at the end, first there is the two wide areas where everyone pushes to get to the front of the door and really the CM is counting everyone that can go into the "show" at the next viewing so once you are in there you are in, no reason to push (not meaning You by anyone posting on here, just the general you...LOL)

Then after the show (Aerosmith) and the doors open to the Limos again with the pushing, I am usually a single rider on this since not many in my family want to go, so I can't block anyone, especially teens without supervision are the ones that pretty much push me out of the way to get on.

I will usually just let them past me if they are in that much of a hurry that they feel the need to push, we are all gonna get on fairly soon enough anyway.

I also don't really like how HM is set up at the end where the line just kinda "pools" before the entrance door....I have been pushed around there too.

TOT is kinda similar where I think the lines are wide....I have never experienced a problem there though (yet)

POTC has that problem big time! OFten we walk uder the parrot heading in the building and there really is no line there. Choose left or right. But then it gets interesting! As you are strolling through you come across a few people slowly walking in front of you and haven't caught up to the back of the line yet. They stop to look at the cannons' down the cellar, etc. I say pass them if they stop to tak in the scenery, otherwise I walk behind them. It's only a matter of seconds from when they will get done with the ride and you will get done.

My DW is Brazilian; it is just a culture thing. She added to our conversation (after I got annoyed when a whole family ducked the ropes and pushed past us on the way to the front door of HM) that I would not survive in Brazil. What was nice is that we quickly caught up to the family because the doors to the mansion were closed. :rotfl:
