Moving Animals

I'm getting ready to have to move my 2 cats from NC to CO, I've gotten them some sedatives but beyond that I need some real tips on what to expect and how to handle it...I know there has to be someone out there that has moved a long distance with cats...mine have an attitude problem too, and tend to get sick in the car, any tips on feeding, poddying and comfort for them? Thanks!

When we moved our cat from VA to Italy, we gave him a carrier larger than what he actually needed so he has an area to move around. We placed one of those absorbent pads that looked more like a mini mattress in the bottom of the carrier.....so that way if he urinated, it would absorb and also work as a comfort pad rather than laying on hard plastic. We placed a towel, his favorite stuffed critters that are his babies, and one of my son's shirts in the kennel. That way, he had a mini home and things that were familar to him. He did just fine on the 10 hour flight.

We moved our 16 cats from MA to FL last November. We bought 9 small and medium cages and put them in the back of the conversion van that we have. There were 7 cages with 2 cats each (we paired them up according to how well they got along) and 2 cages with one cat each. Those two needed to be alone. Each cage had a two small dishes, one for water and one for food that were glued to the floor of the cage. We also put newspaper on the bottom of the cage for bathroom purposes.

My son and step-son drove them down. They said that there was a lot of yowling but no fights. The drive was straight through (took about 28 hours) but they did stop from time to time to talk to and give the cats some TLC.

My well traveled cats got over their journey in a day or so. My son and step son have never been the same!
