Movies you would remake to make better?

There are movies out there where I feel like, "There's a good movie in there somehwere." I don't know that I would "remake" them, but maybe revisit them, if possible let the director have a crack at getting it right in a new cut. With the right changes, some movies could go from terrible to great!

My prime candidate is Star Trek V - it has some truly great individual scenes and excellent character work - but it all falls apart early on and never comes back together.

World War Z. The book is amazing but the movie is terrible and nothing like the book. It really should have been a limited TV series somewhere like Netflix or HBO with each chapter a different episode.

The Harry Potter movies. Eventually I stopped watching them because there were too many changes from the books that annoyed me.
Ella Enchanted is another where I'd make an actual loyal adaption of the book. The movie was horrendous.

The Black Cauldron. It terrified me as a child. I watched it as an adult. It was AWFUL. There is so much promise there.

Really it's just the finale, as Katzenberg thought it was too scary. I'd love to seem them restore that ending. The movie does have a cult following these days - it would make a great Disney+ release. There has been off-and-on talk about a live-action version of the book series at Disney, but it hasn't seemed to materialize.

Wow, how do you start? Just about all movies out the past decade are horrible. So many of them a remake of the original movies like Jurassic World. It's just Jurassic Park 1a, same movie. Then I see trailers of JW2. Ummm.... dinosaurs in the city? Gee, where have I seen that before.

Don't bother with remakes, unless perhaps it is a silent film. There is plenty of good material (books) out there that have not been made into movies or tv shows. Look at the 'Last of us' based on a video game. Only one episode so far, but it looks good.

I've played the game and I watched the first episode last night. It's excellent and I like the added scenes that were not in the game. I was expecting a shot for shot remake (to which there are a few scenes that are literally taken straight from the game) but I like that there are differences to make the show unique.

I also agree with not bothering with remakes. I'm so over them.

Case in point. 'The Ten Commandments' and 'Ben Hur' were originally silent films. They were remade with sound and color and were excellent and considered classics. They were remade again and are awful.

I'd say don't remake movies that were actually good because you most likely will not improve on a classic. But go right ahead and remake a bad movie with a good premise and try to make it better.

2007 Golden Compass - could have been so much better

Didn't they redo it as a series on Netflix or Amazon? I didn't think it was a bad movie, but it was disappointing that they couldn't continue the series.

I heard they made an effort to do the series a little differently than the game, as you're not going to get the same experience as you are playing a game (especially with pacing). Which is good, since so many game-to-film adaptations disappoint. Though Super Mario Brothers is a fun dumpster fire to witness.

I watched a walkthrough of Last of Us years ago, so I got to "see" the original story play out. Ended up with a free copy of the game later, but I already watched it, so didn't bother playing.
