On our Wonder cruise 11/23-27, they did a pretty cool thing with the Haunted Mansion by showing it at 12:01 a.m. on 12/26, the day it opened. That means that cruise passengers were the first in the U.S. to see it! I assume they did the same thing on Magic. With two littler ones (6&9), we didn't stay up for the first showing, but we did make the 2:00 p.m. screening. The room was packed and we even saw cms from the stage shows scrambling to get some of the last seats in the WD Theater.

Does anyone know if they've done this before with other films?

We saw "The Rookie" premier a couple of years ago. Has the "press" waiting for the guest, TV crew bradcasting on to the screen, and photographers "taking" pictures!! Lots of fun!!

This is generally common practice for the Disney ships. Usually movies produced by the Walt Disney Company's production studios (Walt Disney Pictures, Hollywood, Miramax) and distributed by their distribution arm (Buena Vista Distribution) are shown on the Magic and Wonder at the same time they premier on land.

DCL is the only cruise line that can show first-run movies because they're the only one's that own the studios!

Pretty cool, huh? ::yes::

Yep. And just to clarify, these movies are usually rated G, PG, or PG-13 from Disney, Touchstone, and Hollywood Pictures.

Movies from Miramax (and its Dimension subsidiary) are rare, even though Miramax is owned by Disney. I wouldn't expect to see movies like "Bad Santa" (Dimension) or "Kill Bill" (Miramax) on the DCL ships. But, they showed movies like Spy Kids 2 (Dimension).

Sometimes, the Buena Vista Theatre shows movies from other studios. On our March 2002 cruise, they showed "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (Paramount Pictures) and "Cats and Dogs" (Warner Bros. Pictures). Such non-Disney movies are not shown until they are in second run cinemas or even available on DVD.

On our cruise, there was one exception to the "G, PG, PG-13" ratings. Three nights, the Buena Vista Theatre showed the R-rated "The Royal Tenebaums" (Touchstone), but only at 10:30 p.m.

We had Open Range on our cruise. Rated R.

Yep, they had the PremEAR of Freaky Friday at 12:01am on our cruise.

I went to bed.;) :p

I think it has beome a DCL practice whenever a new Disney film is being release on land....we've had it happen twice.
